Rose men edge Anderson

ANDERSON — Rose-Hulman successfully defended two shots in the final five seconds by Anderson University to earn a 71-70 men’s basketball victory Wednesday night.

Rose earned its fourth consecutive win and improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Engineers are tied for first place in the HCAC with Transylvania, which Rose-Hulman will face in Kentucky on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman led 70-65 on a layup by senior Jason Haslag with 1:18 left. Phil Hogan cut the margin to 70-68 with a three-pointer with 58 seconds left.

Sophomore Julian Strickland made one of two free throws to give Rose a 71-68 lead with 50 seconds left. Andrew Bowman of Anderson trimmed the margin to 71-70 with 33 seconds remaining with two made free throws.

Rose-Hulman ran the clock down to 18 seconds before the Ravens committed a foul. The Engineers missed both free throws, however, to give Anderson an opportunity to steal the victory.

Anderson had a shot off a scramble with four seconds left that fell short on a layup by Phil Hogan. Jake Browne grabbed the rebound and tossed an off-balance layup in the air that fell short. Time expired as both teams battled for the final rebound.

Strickland paced Rose with a career-high 24 points and four rebounds. Junior Austin Weatherford added 18 points, four rebounds and six assists for the Engineers.

Hogan led Anderson with 23 points. Brock Morrison added 17 points and seven rebounds, with Bowman contributing 15 points and six boards.

Rose-Hulman improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in HCAC play, while Anderson fell to 8-6 and 4-3 in conference games. The Engineers travel to Transylvania in a showdown of the league’s two first-place teams Saturday at 3 p.m.
