Rose men run winning steak to 11 games

Dominating defensive effort by Engineers to defeat Anderson

TERRE HAUTE — Anderson arrived in Terre Haute with a 7-6 record and a scoring average of 76.5 points per game.

The Ravens will leave a .500 team after the nation’s top scoring defense of Rose-Hulman held them to 40 points. The d3hoops.com No. 23-ranked Engineers did what they’ve done throughout their school-record start, pulling away for a 69-40 men’s college basketball victory.

“We’ve put people away for the most part,” coach Jim Shaw said. “That’s the sign of a good team.”

The Engineers’ energy at both ends was too much for Anderson, and James Pillischafske brought his shooting touch.

The senior guard hit two 3-pointers in the first three minutes, and point guard Austin Weatherford converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to put Rose-Hulman ahead 9-0. The three points also gave Weatherford 1,000 for his career.

“It’s a career goal but it wasn’t something I was coming into the game saying I have to do it. But it’s over now and I’m looking forward to Saturday’s game,” Weatherford said, referring to a big game with defending regular-season champion Transylvania on Saturday in Hulbert Arena.

“Scoring 1,000 points in college is definitely a great milestone,” Shaw added. “It puts him in great company of some really great players from our history. I’m proud and pleased to be a part of watching him do that.”

Pillischafske added his third 3-pointer to put Hulman ahead 12-4 at the 14:40 mark.

The Engineers, allowing just 47.2 points, then rode their defensive effort to a 10-3 spurt. A steal by reserve Jimmy Miller led to Julian Strickland assisting Nate Gissentanner down low for a 20-7 Rose-Hulman edge. Miller scored on the Engineers’ next possession to cap the Rose-Hulman run.

Strickland and Pillischafske tied for team-high honors with 13 points. Strickland went 6-of-7 from the field to lead Rose-Hulman to 63.6 percent shooting from the field.

Rose-Hulman started the second half on an 11-3 run to take a 43-23 lead just 3 1/2 minutes into the half.

The Engineers have deservedly built up a strong reputation defensively, but Shaw’s team and its motion offense is a chore to defend as well.

“That’s the whole point of being a good team defensively — sometimes your offense takes a while to get going — and you’re in a good position to win games when your offense takes over as long as the defense is solid consistently,” Shaw said.
