Rose-Hulman relied on a complete game pitching effort from freshman Ben Menich to top Earlham 4-2 in Friday night’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader opener at Art Nehf Field.
The first game began one hour late due to a heavy rain late Friday afternoon. Game two of Friday’s doubleheader began at 9:05 p.m.
Menich scattered 10 hits with five strikeouts to improve to 6-0 for the season, allowing two earned runs with two walks in the complete-game performance.
Offensively, Will Burchett led the Engineers with two singles and one run scored. Jamie Weinle added a two-run double.
The Engineers improved to 27-11 and 18-5 in HCAC play with the Game 1 victory, while Earlham dropped to 14-22 and 4-18 respectively.
• Two Engineers honored — Two members of the Rose-Hulman team captured Capital One academic all-district honors by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Juniors Ethan Post and Matthew Turk were chosen to the first-team NCAA Division III academic all-district seven squad. Both advance to the national ballot, which is set for release May 30.
Post owns a 3-0 record in eight starts and nine appearances in Rose-Hulman’s pitching rotation. In the classroom, the chemical engineering and chemistry double major has a 4.00 grade-point average.
Turk is batting .287 with nine doubles, two triples and one home run in 36 appearances and 33 starts. The electrical-engineering major has a 3.83 GPA.
• Dixon, Christopher honored — Indiana State junior Emily Dixon and sophomore McCall Christopher were named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Scholar-Athlete team.
Dixon was named to the first team, while Christopher was named honorable mention. The two join four other Sycamores were have received the MVC honor since 2006 including two-time first-team selection Breanne Smith (2009 and 2010) and first-team selections Kayley Bodine (2009), Mackenzie Mack (2010) and Astrid Parsson (2010).
Dixon has a 3.96 grade-point average majoring in athlete training and tied for 27th at 2012 MVC Championship with 238 (75-84-79).
Christopher has a 3.66 GPA, also majoring in athletic training, tied for 13th in 2012 MVC championships with 211 (77-79-75).
• Wood aces with iron — At Geneva Hills, Doug Wood fired a hole-in-one on hole No. 2 (par-3, 126 yards) using a 9-iron in the Terre Haute Honor Guard outing on Friday.
Witnesses were Ed Zeppelin, Rusty Gray and Bill Peifer.
• Kuhn third for VU — At Toledo, Ohio, Gabrielle Kuhn of Marshall, Ill. placed third in the women’s 5,000-meter run (19:47.30) in the NJCAA Region XII Meet on Friday.
