SPRINGFIELD, Ill. —
Nick Johnson had three hits including a double and Kyle Kempf had a double and a homer Friday night as the Terre Haute Rex defeated the Springfield Sliders 7-3 in Prospect League baseball at Robin Roberts Field.
The victory brought the Rex back to the .500 mark at 8-8 and enabled the visitors to split a two-game series. Terre Haute continues an eight-game road trip today at Hannibal, Mo.
Johnson had the big bat in three early rallies, singling to start a two-run second inning, doubling to set up a sacrifice fly by Brian Norwood in the third and driving in both fifth-inning runs with another single.
Kempf, who scored on Johnson’s hit in the fifth, hit a solo homer in the seventh and doubled, stole third and came home on an error in the ninth.
Tommy Strunc pitched six innings for the win, relieved by Michael Schroeder and Nick Blount. Mike Fitzgerald and Matthew Tellor had solo homers for the Sliders.
