Burnam, Guthrie lead Rex past Bombers 11-4

Huntingburg — Kyle Burnam and Alex Guthrie drove in three runs apiece in a seven-run sixth inning Friday night as the Terre Haute Rex overcame an early deficit for an 11-4 win over the Dubois County Bombers.

The Rex took the lead in the top of the first inning when Nolan Earley led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

But starting pitcher Clayton Hicks struggled, giving up a hit, a walk, a hit batsman and another walk to force in a run before an out was recorded in the bottom of the inning. A double-play ball put the home team ahead but helped Hicks get out of the jam, and he pitched six scoreless innings after that.

The visitors still trailed by that 2-1 score entering the top of the sixth, but an error, a hit by Chad Reeves and a walk loaded the bases for Burnam, who tripled to drive in all three runs and give the Rex a 4-2 lead.

With two out in the inning, a walk and a hit batsman reloaded the bases and this time it was Guthrie who came through with a double to drive in three more runs. An RBI single by Joe Meggs completed the seven-run inning.

Terre Haute padded the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. Dubois County tallied a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The same two teams continue a back-and-forth three game series at 7:05 p.m. today at Bob Warn Field. Both return to League Stadium at Huntingburg for a 6:05 p.m. game Sunday.
