TERRE HAUTE —
The Terre Haute Rex have had to deal with a lengthy rain delay, a waterlogged field, a makeup doubleheader that ran well past midnight, a very short night, then if that wasn’t enough, even endured an 18-minute umpire delay.
And that’s just in the first four days — from Thursday to Sunday — to begin the second half of the Prospect League’s regular season.
Ah, you can’t beat fun at the old ballpark!
That said, the Rex brushed aside those myriad distractions to win three of four games to begin the second half, capping the weekend with an impressive 10-2 victory over Danville at Bob Warn Field on Sunday afternoon.
In fact, it was the second consecutive 10-2 win for the Rex over the Dan — in two states within 18 hours.
After the Rex suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader at Danville on Saturday, the Rex decisively won by that identical 10-2 score in the second game which finished up in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
“The guys made a nice adjustment [Saturday] in the second game to come out and score as many runs as we did,” Rex manager Brian Dorsett stated. “Today, to come back after being down 1-0 … the offense was tremendous, a lot of nice defensive plays as well.
“We did a good job of putting a complete game together. The guys really got focused today … actually, two games in a row of playing effective baseball.”
Once the umpires reported for duty on Sunday, the Dans quickly jumped to a 1-0 first-inning lead off Rex starting pitcher Alex Sachs. Sachs struggled through his first three innings, allowing two hits in each frame.
But to Sachs’ credit, he didn’t allow another run to score — stranding six baserunners in the first three innings. Sachs settled down after his early problems, retiring 13 of the last 15 hitters he faced to give his team seven solid innings. Brennan Ragon pitched the last two innings for the Rex.
“Alex did a good job of getting his game back together,” Dorsett noted.
While Sachs did his job on the mound, the Rex offense lifted a whole heap of pressure off his shoulders by pounding out 15 hits.
The Rex assumed a 2-1 lead in the third inning, a rally started by a one-out bunt single by Koby Kraemer. On the play, Kraemer reached second on a throwing error by the Dans’ pitcher. Kraemer scored on single by Chris Carlson, then Carlson scored on a double by Alex Guthrie.
An error, a wild pitch and a RBI-double by Joe Meggs in the fourth inning put the Rex ahead 3-1. Then in the sixth, newcomer Joel Licon powered a home run over the left-field fence for a 4-1 lead.
The Rex applied the coup de grace with a six-run seventh inning outburst. Once again, an infield single — this time by Carlson — started the rally.
Following for the Rex was an RBI-double by Guthrie, an RBI-single by Alex DeLeon, a walk to Licon, RBI-singles by Meggs and Cole Vicars, an infield single by Kyle Burnam, topped off by a bases-loaded walk issued to Kraemer.
Guthrie was a perfect 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Meggs was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Rex offense. Other big contributors were Vicars (2 for 3 with a RBI) and Carlson (2 for 4 with a RBI).
With their 3-1 second-half record, the Rex assumed at least a share of first place in the Central Division. The Rex lead the first-half champion Dans by 1 1/2 games.
“Anytime you play a division rival and you win, it’s important,” Dorsett stated. “Our goal is to win the second half. We feel like we can. I feel like this team can put some wins here together. The pitching is getting better, the bullpen is going to be nice and rested.
“The [All-Star] break came at the right time. Anytime you come back and win three out of four after the break, it’s positive.”
The Rex will be idle today, then host the Hannibal Cavemen at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sliders’ frustration against Rex continues
The Springfield Sliders probably curse the departure of the Dubois County Bombers from the Prospect League more than most.
What do the Bombers, who now ply their trade in the Ohio Valley League, have to do with the Sliders, or for that matter, the Terre Haute Rex?
When the Bombers left the Prospect League it created a situation where the Prospect League’s West Division teams — the Rex and Sliders both being members — had one less opponent to play in intradivision play.

Sanchez stays hot to lead Rex to victory
Hot seems to be the right temperature for Terre Haute Rex Ricky Sanchez.
After going 3-for-5 in the Rex win on Tuesday at Hannibal, Sanchez drove in four runs with a two hits Wednesday in Terre Haute’s 6-5 win over the same Cavemen at Bob Warn Stadium.
The win allowed the Rex to maintain a one-game lead on Quincy in the Prospect League West Division standings.
Sanchez, a catcher and outfielder out of Notre Dame, started the night hitting .355 and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
