DANVILLE, ILL. —
For Terre Haute Rex manager Brian Dorsett, the opening game of a doubleheader with the Danville Dans was an unwelcome reprise of the worst moments from the first half of the season.
Baserunning and fielding mistakes wiped out a lot of the good the Rex did against the Dans in the opening game of the twinbill. Terre Haute paid the price with a 3-1 loss in front of a large crowd at Danville Stadium.
“That was one of those games we look back at and we say it looked like us in the first half. We didn’t capitalize when they gave us some opportunities,” Dorsett said.
The Rex won the nightcap with the Dans 10-2 as Terre Haute native Koby Kraemer went 2 for 4 with a home run.
The Rex were originally supposed to play the Dans on Friday and Saturday in a two-game series, but a doubleheader — each game lasting seven innings — became necessary when field conditions at soaked Danville Stadium made it impossible to play Friday. The Rex made the short trip to Danville for the game Friday for nothing, a situation Dorsett thought was preventable.
“There was no way we were going to play on that field,” said Dorsett, who gestured with his hand that standing water was several inches deep. “It’s in the hands of the [Danville] owners and umpires when the game gets called. We sat out here until 9:30 and got back to Terre Haute at midnight.
“It was a long night, so the way we played in the first game doesn’t taste good at all. I told the guys [before the nightcap] that we’re not going to put up with that [kind of play] in the second half,” Dorsett added.
The “kind of play” referred to some of the mistakes the Rex made to get themselves in a hole against the Dans. The problems began in the first inning for Terre Haute.
Kyle Burnam and Nolan Earley strung together consecutive one-out singles when Chris Carlson hit a slow chopper to first base.
Danville first baseman Harry Clark hesitated to throw to any base until he saw Burnam make a wide turn around third. Burnam tried to score, but Clark threw to the plate and Burnam got caught in a rundown. Knowing he was going to be tagged out, Burnam tried to draw out the rundown to allow Earley to reach third, but Danville catcher Austin Green tagged Burnam and then dove toward third base where he tagged Earley out before he reached the bag. The unusual 3-2 double play took steam of out Terre Haute’s sails right from the start.
Dorsett said the play was unusual in the respect that the first baseman didn’t make the right choice on the play, but it paid off anyway.
“It was kind of a fluke deal. He made a mistake. He’s got to go to second base or touch the bag to try and get two. But Kyle got caught in a rundown and then we botched it after that,” Dorsett said.
Danville capitalized in the third inning. Miles Silverstein led off with a single and Clark followed with a walk. Cole Bieser, batting ninth, tapped the ball to Rex pitcher Austin Haynal for a sure out. Haynal’s throw to first sailed wide of the bag, however, and allowed Silverstein to score the first run and put the Dans’ runners on second and third.
A sacrifice fly by Sam Frost made it 2-0, followed by a RBI double by Jesse Tierney to make it 3-0. It appeared matters would get worse for the Rex when Ray Hernandez made an error on a John Hogan grounder, but Tierney tried to take an extra base on the play and Hernandez redeemed himself by throwing him out at the plate to end the inning.
It was an unfortunate inning for Haynal, who pitched well otherwise. He scattered four hits in six innings of work and had seven strikeouts.
The Rex scored their only run in the sixth. Carlson led off with a triple and scored on an Alex Guthrie single during Terre Haute’s next at-bat, but the Rex couldn’t build on the momentum as the inning petered out.
“Playing seven innings, not only does it feel shorter, but nine innings makes you feel like you have more chances to win it,” Earley said.
The Rex fell to 1-1 with the loss. With the Prospect League’s split-season format, all win-loss records were erased for the second half. Danville (1-0) was the first half champion of the Central Division. The Rex finished two games behind the Dans during the first half.
The Rex host the Dans today at Bob Warn Field.
