TERRE HAUTE —
Losing their third straight game, the Terre Haute Rex let a one-run lead slip away in the seventh inning and dropped an 8-6 decision to the Dubois County Bombers in Prospect League baseball late Saturday night at Bob Warn Field.
An RBI double by Jeff Zahn and a two-run single by Frank Rawdow staked Dubois County to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first. But the Rex answered with three runs of their own on a bases-loaded walk by Brett Teschner, a sacrifice fly by Kyle Kempf and an RBI fielder’s choice hit by Kyle Zimmerman.
The home team went ahead 4-3 in the second when No. 9 hitter Alex Reynolds blasted a one-out triple to deep center field and came home on Edmund Cheatham’s single up the middle.
For the next four innings, starting pitchers Ryan Billo of the Bombers and Zimmerman of the Rex settled down and kept the score the same.
But leading off the top of the seventh, the visitors’ Bo Ausmus got hit by a pitch and and Dalton Rouleau followed with a single. One out later, Chris Tavaras singled to left to send in Ausmus and Zahn slapped a single to right to send in Rouleau. A sac fly by Rawdow enabled Tavaras to race home from third and increase the Bombers’ new lead to 6-4.
Dubois County plated two more runs in the eighth to pad its cushion to 8-4, then the Terre Haute squad countered with two in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Nick Johnson and a sac fly by Reynolds. But a one-two-three bottom of the ninth sent the Rex down to another defeat.
Five Rex errors did not affect the earned status of any of the Bombers’ runs, but they still caused Rex manager Brian Dorsett to express disappointment about his team’s fielding.
“I was really happy with Zimmerman’s [pitching] effort,” he said. “He gave up three runs in the first and came back and just really slammed the door shut. He got up around 100 pitches, so I wanted to take him out. Aside from that, we had some errors that kinda bit us.
“We’ve got to eliminate the careless miscues. We’ll get there. Our guys are learning. Some of these guys haven’t played for a while, so they’re getting back into it. Once we get our whole ballclub here [from college players competing in the NCAA tournament], I think that’s going to make a lot of difference in how we substitute, pinch-hit and manage our bullpen situation.”
One of the few Rex bright spots was Reynolds, who did something positive in all four of his plate appearances and ended up 2 for 2 with a run scored and a run batted in.
“He’s a guy we picked up after the season started,” Dorsett explained. “He’s from East Tennessee State. He’s been a tremendous asset playing both second base and the outfield for us.”
