Walk on, walk off: Rex win with dramatics in ninth inning

TERRE HAUTE — A starter for the Southern Illinois University was the hero in what is typically enemy territory Thursday night at Bob Warn Field, the home of Indiana State and —now that the calendar is flipped to June — Terre Haute Rex baseball.

SIU’s Nick Johnson smashed a line drive to right field to score Ronnie Mitchell from second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Rex to a 3-2 victory over Prospect League rival Danville.

“It feels really good in front of a crowd like that,” Johnson said of a turnout of 1,161 fans. “I just got good wood on the ball in the last inning, got us the win.”

Pinch hitter Daniel Heefner led off the ninth with a walk, and West Vigo graduate Cameron Fagg bunted him to second. Danville Dans reliever Mike Rueda then walked Chris Manning and Mitchell, loading the bases for Indiana State standout Koby Kraemer.

Kraemer turned on a Rueda pitch, smashing a one-hopper down the third-base line. Dans third baseman Brayden Jones took a hit away from Kraemer by getting the force at third, but Kraemer’s RBI tied the game at 2-2.

“Koby came up big,” manager Brian Dorsett said. “Thought that might have been a game-winner there too. Guy made a great play on him.”

Dorsett praised starting pitcher Chris Nunn, a 6-foot-5 lefty, for battling through seven innings. Nunn gave up four walks and eight hits but only allowed two runs.

Johnson said the victory could set the Rex up for a strong start to the 56-game season.

“The whole team executed great,” Johnson said. “We moved baserunners when we needed to. Everything just came into place for us."

Dans starting pitcher, right-hander Jeff Crosswhite, used a big breaking ball to hold the Rex to three hits in five innings. Danville had a 2-0 lead after Crosswhite left the game.

“To show resiliency this early in the season, it’s always a good thing. It builds you up a little bit, builds some confidence going into the weekend," Johnson said.

Johnson and Chris Roglen led the Rex with two hits apiece. Relief pitcher Cody Wren tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three, to earn the victory.

Chace Mitchell had a seventh-inning double. He reached third on another sacrifice bunt by Fagg, and Manning drove Mitchell home with a groundout to short.

Fagg did not play this spring, and will play for Lincoln Trail College next year. He’s on a seven-day contract with the Rex, but Dorsett said he could play himself into a full-time role.

“For not playing in such a long time, and get two key bunts down for us, that was huge,” Dorsett said.

The Rex play the Dubois County Bombers today at 7 p.m.

“I love the fact that we battled in that game. The way we came back and won that game, that’s a great way to start this year off,” Dorsett said.

• Prettyman getting comfortable as boss

  At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
  Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
  Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

  What do the Bombers, who now ply their trade in the Ohio Valley League, have to do with the Sliders, or for that matter, the Terre Haute Rex?
  When the Bombers left the Prospect League it created a situation where the Prospect League’s West Division teams — the Rex and Sliders both being members — had one less opponent to play in intradivision play.

  Hot seems to be the right temperature for Terre Haute Rex Ricky Sanchez.
  After going 3-for-5 in the Rex win on Tuesday at Hannibal, Sanchez drove in four runs with a two hits Wednesday in Terre Haute’s 6-5 win over the same Cavemen at Bob Warn Stadium.
  The win allowed the Rex to maintain a one-game lead on Quincy in the Prospect League West Division standings.
  Sanchez, a catcher and outfielder out of Notre Dame, started the night hitting .355 and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

  Zack Evans drilled the second Terre Haute Rex home run of the season Sunday, smashing a line drive into the trees in left field. The ball left Bob Warn Field in a hurry, but the solo shot was not enough to overcome a 3-1 deficit to the Springfield Sliders.

  During a 7-1 start and franchise-best seven-game winning streak, Terre Haute Rex pitching was the catalyst. Through eight games, the Rex led the Prospect League with an earned-run average of 1.11.
  Even after giving up 10 runs  Friday night in a 10-6 loss to the Quincy Gems, the Rex (7-2) are still the league leader in ERA at 2.09.
