TERRE HAUTE —
Confidence is high in the Terre Haute clubhouse after a fifth straight victory Friday, but work remains to be done as the Rex (7-7) remain 51⁄2 games behind first-place Quincy (12-1) in the Prospect League’s Western Division.
The Rex backed starter Connor Fisk (1-1) with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, holding on to defeat Dubois County, 7-1, in front of 931 fans who defied a steady rain much of the game.
Fisk went eight shutout innings, striking out eight. He allowed one run in the first on three singles, but he recovered to retire the next 11 consecutive batters.
“Connor threw the ball real well. Even the first inning, they didn’t hit him hard. He got up to 105 pitches. Had he had a shutout, I would have let him go out and try to finish it,” Rex manager Brian Dorsett said.
Fisk, a 2010 draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers out of high school, was happy to keep the Rex rolling. Fisk said he’d like to consider himself the ace of the pitching staff, but other guys have also pitched well.
“I felt pretty good today. Everyone’s doing their thing. The biggest thing is we’re all competing against each other, trying to do better than the next guy,” Fisk said.
Joe Meggs, an honorable-mention All-Pac 10 selection this spring, had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the offense. Meggs dropped down a surprise bunt with runners on first and third to tie the score at 1-1 in the first. Chris Manning scored on the play after leading off with a double to right-center field.
Meggs has four RBI in five games since joining the Rex.
“I think you win one, win two; if you win that third one you’re on a roll and you get everybody believing you can beat anybody. I think that’s big,” Meggs said. “I think getting a couple runs early was key. [Fisk] did a good job of throwing strikes. We’ve got everything going together pretty good too.”
With 10 hits the Rex had a double-digit hit total for the second time this week.
Jordan Pearson led off the fifth with a triple to the wall in right-center field and scored on a base hit by Ronnie Mitchell.
“We’re finally starting to click,” Pearson said. “I’ve been in a slump, been working extra and it paid off [Friday].”
The Rex continue a three-game set at home today against Butler. Newcomer Erlin Santos, a right-hander from the Dominican Republic, will make the start.
Santos was the MVP of the Division II Junior College World Series. He had a 1.29 ERA this spring for Western Oklahoma State.
