Michael Son’s pitching leads Rex to win over Dragons in heated game

TERRE HAUTE — Emotion is a two-way street in baseball. But the rule of thumb is that it’s a good thing when the team wins.

The Terre Haute Rex had some emotional moments — one in particular that nearly saw both teams boil over — against the Dupage Dragons at Bob Warn Field on Wednesday. But the 5-4 win over the Dragons allowed the Rex to take it all in stride.

Acrimony boiled to the surface in the middle of the 6th inning when Rex coach Darrin Barton and a member of Dupage’s coaching staff got into what seemed to be a heated argument out of nowhere on the third base line in front of the Rex dugout. Both benches cleared and words were exchanged, but nothing else came of it.

Dorsett said there was history behind the confrontation as there have been situations in games at Dupage earlier in the season that led to the incident. The confrontation on Wednesday came when the Rex felt Dupage’s coaching staff was saying things to Rex starter Michael Son.

“There were some things that happened at their place earlier in the year where I thought they were taking it to another level. It got heated. We’ve been good sports, we’ve been handling it the right way, but we didn’t feel they were handling the pressure at that point,” Dorsett said. “Darrin Barton got in their grill a little bit and said get in your dugout and mind your own business, you don’t need to be talking to our starting pitcher.”

At the time, the Rex led 4-1 and would increase their lead to 5-1 by the end of the sixth inning. Runs were scored on a first-inning RBI single by Chris Carlson, a two-run triple by Carlson, followed by a wild pitch that scored him in the fifth, and a run scored by Koby Kraemer on a rundown in the sixth.

However, the star of the show to that point in the game was Son. The Rex starter didn’t allow a hit in his first four innings of work and eventually allowed just one run in seven innings of work.

“He was tremendous. He’s part of the six-man rotation and he’s been big for us ever since he came here taking pressure off of our pitchers,” Dorsett said.

Son’s solid outing was nearly for naught after the Dragons (4-10) rallied in the eighth. Rex reliever Brandon Dorsett struggled as he allowed two singles to start the inning and eventually loaded the bases. It set in motion an inning where the Rex conceded three runs to give Dupage a chance to take the lead as the Dragons had the go-ahead run on base.

Manager Dorsett called upon Tyler Browning to put out the fire and he responded. Browning, who struggled early in the season, has been hot of late, and he struck out Jomel Torres to get the Rex out of their eighth inning jam.

The Rex stuck with Browning in the ninth and he rewarded them with a 1-2-3 inning to clinch the Terre Haute victory. Browning has not allowed a run in his last six outings.

“His last four outings have just been stellar. He’s looked like the Tyler Browning everybody thought we had. We had Ryne Purcell ready to go in the ninth, but we didn’t need him because Tyler did so well,” Dorsett said.

The Rex will host Richmond tonight. The RiverRats and Rex are in a heated race for first place in the Prospect League’s Central Division. The Rex (9-3) have a half-game lead over the RiverRats (8-3) after Wednesday’s action.

  • Prettyman getting comfortable as boss

At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

  • SPT061313 rex johnson.jpg Sliders’ frustration against Rex continues

The Springfield Sliders probably curse the departure of the Dubois County Bombers from the Prospect League more than most.
What do the Bombers, who now ply their trade in the Ohio Valley League, have to do with the Sliders, or for that matter, the Terre Haute Rex?
When the Bombers left the Prospect League it created a situation where the Prospect League’s West Division teams — the Rex and Sliders both being members — had one less opponent to play in intradivision play.

Hot seems to be the right temperature for Terre Haute Rex Ricky Sanchez.
After going 3-for-5 in the Rex win on Tuesday at Hannibal, Sanchez drove in four runs with a two hits Wednesday in Terre Haute’s 6-5 win over the same Cavemen at Bob Warn Stadium.
The win allowed the Rex to maintain a one-game lead on Quincy in the Prospect League West Division standings.
Sanchez, a catcher and outfielder out of Notre Dame, started the night hitting .355 and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
