Rex can’t shake bad start, opposing pitcher; drop from top of division

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex lost 3-1 to last-place DeKalb County on another sauna-like evening at Bob Warn Field, falling out of a first-place tie with Nashville.

The Rex made an error on the opening batter — a dropped popup by catcher Brett Teschner — falling behind 1-0 on a double by the Liners’ next batter Alex Beckmann.

Liners pitcher Matt Lynch then shut down the Rex offense, holding them without a hit until Brett Teschner found the gap in right-center for a sixth-inning RBI double.

Lynch had help from his catcher, Anthony Foulk, who ended Rex innings twice by gunning down attempted base stealers.

“It doesn’t help to start the game the way we started it,” manager Brian Dorsett said. “It’s a let down, but we’ve got to be able to regroup from that.”

The Rex walked five times against Lynch but weren’t able to convert. Lucas Hileman led off the ninth with a single, and Stephen Bruno was hit by a pitch.

Joe Meggs moved the potential tying run into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Teschner and Chris Roglen were retired by Liners’ closer Jarad Miller.

“[Lynch] kept us off balance. He located pretty well. Just a night like this, things didn’t fall,” Hileman said.

“Maybe coming off an off day, may have been  lackadaisical. Just have to get ready for tomorrow. We could have 25 hits and 15 runs tomorrow. That’s just the way the game goes.”

Rex starter Cody Wren battled through six innings, allowing six hits and just one walk. Nick Heinz tossed three innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

The Rex returned Monday morning from a long road trip at Lorain County, which is near Cleveland.

“I think we looked flat,” Dorsett said. “Coming off of a long travel day. We got home at 6:45 Monday morning. That’s part of life. You’ve got to learn to get through it.  That guy just had our number today.”

The Rex offense was without leading run producer Koby Kraemer, who left the ballpark before the game due to an illness, Dorsett said. Nick Johnson, who’s been swinging a good bat, also did not start due to a minor toe injury.

“We just got to be better at making the adjustments [at the plate],” Dorsett said.

Hileman said the team just has to bounce back today at Quincy.

“These games against the teams in the bottom you know, we’ve really got to buckle down,” Hileman said.
