TERRE HAUTE —
It wasn’t so much Thursday night’s game at Bob Warn Field that bothered manager Brian Dorsett of the Terre Haute Rex, although the contest obviously wasn’t one of his favorites.
What concerned him as his first-place team lost its third straight game, a 5-2 yawner against the Nashville Outlaws, was a risky pattern being established with just a little more than a week to go in the regular season.
“We finish up with three at Nashville [including the completion of Monday’s rain-suspended contest], and they’ve had our number,” Dorsett said, after the Rex’s once formidable division lead had shrunk to a game and a half over the second-place Outlaws.
The visitors were certainly in control of Thursday’s game, played before a crowd of 1,264 fans that was the second-best of the season for the Rex, from start to finish — and control was a key word.
Starting pitcher Michael Son labored through a 33-pitch first inning in his first ineffective outing with the Rex, although a two-out error made the only run scored an unearned one, and Terre Haute never caught up.
The Outlaws added three more runs in the top of the fourth, a triple by Matt Borgschulte — the game’s only extra-base hit — the big blow amidst four other hits, then got their final tally in the fifth when Chad Reeves came on in relief and appeared to have found his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam only to walk Nashville’s ninth-place hitter to force in a run.
“The first inning was very difficult … and walks in key situations hurt us,” Dorsett said afterward.
The Rex mounted one rally, and it came in the bottom of the fourth after Nashville’s three-run inning. Successive hits by Nolan Earley — who had two hits and stole two bases — followed by Alex DeLeon and Alex Guthrie produced a run and had runners at first and third with no outs. But Joe Meggs grounded into a double play, scoring DeLeon, and the Rex never again had more than one baserunner at a time.
“It was one of those nights,” Dorsett said later. “Even when we squared it up, it was right at somebody … and their [pitchers] did a good job; they kept us off-balance and they stayed ahead in the count.
“It was by far our worst showing of the second half.”
The Rex have just three remaining home games, including tonight’s contest against the Dupage Dragons — although a home playoff game would be a possibility if the team doesn’t squander its second-half division lead.
“We’ve just got to collect ourselves and keep moving on,” Dorsett concluded.
