TERRE HAUTE —
The Dubois County Bombers’ vintage 1940s style bus — an Ebay purchase by the team that was updated with some modern amenities — broke down a mile from Huntingburg Friday, causing the team to get a late start on a trip to Terre Haute.
The Bombers’ offense was slow to get started as well, but once the Bombers got going, they rolled to a 7-3 victory.
Dubois County was glad it got its two Indiana State position players switched over into the multiple 15-passenger vans because the two Sycamore freshman came up big at Bob Warn Field.
Jeff Zahn and Landon Curry provided clutch hits to help Dubois County solidify its hold on first place in the Prospect League West Division in front of a season-high 1,064 fans.
Zahn, a 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter, brought the Bombers even at 2-2 with two-out, two-run double down the right-field line in the top of the fifth inning.
“Runners on base and I needed to get em in. Low and inside fastball and I just ripped it,” said Zahn, who’s hitting .333 with six RBIs and just three strikeouts in 39 at-bats. “I’m doing pretty good, started off a little rusty because I redshirted, but I’m stroking the ball pretty good now.”
Curry, Indiana State’s catalyst at the top of the offer all spring, has been a spark for the Bombers so far as well.
Curry carried a .545 batting average through his first three games. The Indianapolis native added two hits and a stolen base, his fourth, on Friday night.
“We were a little late to the game, but everything worked out,” said Curry, who’s enjoying the start the Bombers are having. The Rex won on Thursday at League Stadium to give the Bombers their first loss. “Just trying to get on base, start things off, steal some bases. They got us last night so it was good to come in here and get one back.”
Rex starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman hurt himself with shaky control, walking four in 4 1/3 innings.
“We had some momentum [early],” Rex manager Brian Dorsett said. “[Zimmerman] is such a competitor. He didn’t have his greatest stuff tonight. His pitch count got up.”
Austin Nyman provided the go-ahead RBI for the Bombers with a single through a drawn-in infield off reliever Billy Timmerman with runners on second and third. Dorsett brought in lefty Clay Manering to face the left-handed hitting Curry, but the speedster blooped a single into shallow left field to make it 4-2 Bombers.
Dalton Rouleau split the gap in left-center field with a double to score Nyman from second and Curry from first.
The Rex offense offered little threat against the Dubois County relievers. Nick Green tossed scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth innings for the Bombers.
“There’s a lot of season left. We’re going to see these guys a lot,” Dorsett said. “They’re legit. Curry at the top of the order. They’re a lot better ballclub than they were last year.”
