HUNTINGBURG —
The Terre Haute Rex put together a pair of two-out rallies — one with considerable help — and knocked the host Dubois County Bombers out of the Prospect League unbeaten ranks by a 4-1 score Thursday night at League Field.
The two teams had battled through six scoreless innings when Jacob Hayes drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh. Hayes stole second and Alex Reynolds followed with a double to break the tie.
With two out in the top of the eighth, the Bombers got generous. Two errors and a walk loaded the bases, Spencer Mahoney laced a two-run single and the third run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.
The Bombers didn’t go quietly in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs on a pair of walks sandwiched around a hit by Frank Rawdow, but Rex right fielder Casey McCurdy gave closer Nick Blount some big-time help.
A sacrifice fly brought in the only Dubois County run, but McCurdy threw out Rawdow trying to go to third on the play for a double play that pretty much snuffed the Bombers’ rally.
The same two teams play at 7:05 p.m. today at Bob Warn Field.
