Terre Haute Rex eliminated from playoff contention

NASHVILLE, TENN. — The Terre Haute Rex needed to win at least one game in a doubleheader against the Nashville Outlaws to remain alive in the Prospect League's Central Division race.

They couldn't do it.

The Rex managed just one hit in a 2-0 loss to the Outlaws in the opener and suffered heartbreak in the nightcap as Doug Joyce's two-out seventh inning single gave Nashville a 1-0 victory. Prospect League doubleheader games are seven innings long.

At one time, the Rex (14-11) had a four-game division lead, but it melted away in the last two weeks of the season and Terre Haute is currently mired in a five-game losing streak.

The Rex trail Nashville (16-9) by two games with one to play and are eliminated from playoff contention. The Outlaws clinched the second half playoff spot as Richmond¹s loss to Danville on Friday eliminated the River Rats.

The Rex managed their only hit in the opener in the third inning when new acquisition Jordan Pearson managed a two-out single. Nashville pitching struck out eight Rex batters, though Terre Haute managed to draw six walks, but couldn't make anything out of them.

Nashville scored a run in the second inning on a Ryan Emery RBI single. In the fifth, the Outlaws led off with a Matt Borgschulte double and he was knocked in by a Drew Fann single.

The nightcap was a scoreless duel through six innings as Rex starter Chad Reeves and Nashville starter P.J. Francescon matched wits. Both were wild, walking four batters apiece, but neither team could cash in on their baserunners.

The Rex had runners in scoring position in the first, second and third innings. The second ended on a double play. In the third, Pearson was thrown out on an assist by the Nashville left fielder to end the inning.

The Rex had runners at second and third with two outs in the sixth, but Joe Meggs grounded out. In the seventh, Jared Broughton was stranded at second with one out as Pearson struck out and Nolan Earley grounded out.

Nashville broke through in the bottom half of the inning. Walks by Amann and Bryan Johns gave the Outlaws a pair of baserunners with one out.

Ryne Purcell was called upon in relief and he struck out Kevin Smith for the second out. But on an 0-1 count, Joyce singled — Nashville's third base hit of the game. Amann scored from second to give Nashville a dramatic victory.

The Rex wrap up their season tonight as they host Danville at 7 p.m. at Bob Warn Field.

  • Prettyman getting comfortable as boss

At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

  • SPT061313 rex johnson.jpg Sliders’ frustration against Rex continues

The Springfield Sliders probably curse the departure of the Dubois County Bombers from the Prospect League more than most.
What do the Bombers, who now ply their trade in the Ohio Valley League, have to do with the Sliders, or for that matter, the Terre Haute Rex?
When the Bombers left the Prospect League it created a situation where the Prospect League’s West Division teams — the Rex and Sliders both being members — had one less opponent to play in intradivision play.

Hot seems to be the right temperature for Terre Haute Rex Ricky Sanchez.
After going 3-for-5 in the Rex win on Tuesday at Hannibal, Sanchez drove in four runs with a two hits Wednesday in Terre Haute’s 6-5 win over the same Cavemen at Bob Warn Stadium.
The win allowed the Rex to maintain a one-game lead on Quincy in the Prospect League West Division standings.
Sanchez, a catcher and outfielder out of Notre Dame, started the night hitting .355 and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
