RICHMOND —
In the wooden bat Prospect League, power rarely comes into the equation when it comes to offense, but the Terre Haute Rex were the exception that proved the rule in a game at Richmond on Friday.
Back-to-back home runs by Alex DeLeon and Alex Guthrie in the fourth inning fueled the Rex in a 4-3 victory in front of 708 at McBride Stadium.
The victory was the second in as many nights for the Rex against the RiverRats, who had been neck-and-neck with Terre Haute in the Prospect League’s Central Division race. Now the Rex (11-3) enjoy a 21⁄2 game advantage over Richmond with another game scheduled against the RiverRats tonight.
If the Rex finish the second half of the Prospect League in first, they will play Danville in a Central Division playoff after the season concludes. The Rex have 13 games left in the regular season.
Rex starter Alex Sachs and Richmond starter Wes Rehmert were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the fourth. With one out, DeLeon and Guthrie hit their back-to-back home run to stake Terre Haute to a 2-0 lead.
The Rex added two more runs in the fifth. After singles by Joel Licon and Chris Carlson, Nolan Earley knocked in Licon with a RBI single to make it 3-0. A DeLeon double drove in Carlson to make it 4-0.
Richmond scored two in the bottom of the fifth and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth against Rex closer Ryne Purcell. After an error by Guthrie allowed Richmond leadoff hitter Ryan Skellie to reach base, Skellie subsequently stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Skellie scored on a Mitch Widau groundout to make it 4-3.
Purcell settled down from there, retiring Richmond’s remaining hitters to earn his eighth save of the season. Sachs pitched eight innings and scattered six hits to improve to 5-0 overall.
After tonight’s game at Richmond, the Rex travel to Nashville for a two-game series on Sunday and Monday.
