Sisters of Providence celebrate 60th anniversary

EDITOR’S NOTE: Eighteen Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods recently celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. The Tribune-Star features five of the sisters below. Check next Saturday’s edition for more.



Sister Rosemary Eyler is a native of Crawfordsville. She currently ministers with senior citizens in St. Bernard Parish in Crawfordsville.

Eyler, formerly known as Sister Mary Luke, entered the Congregation Feb. 2, 1949, from St. Bernard Parish in Crawfordsville. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1956.

She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education. She received a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in education administration supervision from Indiana State University.

Indiana ministries:

• Greenfield: teacher, St. Michael School (1959-1966).

• Indianapolis: teacher and principal, St. Bridget School (1966-1970); principal, St. Matthew School (1979-1993).

• Evansville: teacher (1970-1973) and principal (1970-1974), Sacred Heart School; coordinating principal, Westside Consolidated School (1974-1979).

• Rensselaer: principal, St. Augustine School (1993-2000).

• Peru: principal, St. Charles Borromeo School (2000-2005).

• Crawfordsville: principal, St. Bernard School (2005-2008).

Sister Eyler also ministered in Illinois, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.



Sister Loretta Maureen Gansemer is a native of Missouri Valley, Iowa. She currently ministers as director of the Senior Center at Guerin Woods at Georgetown, Ind.

Gansemer entered the Congregation Jan. 21, 1949, from St. Joseph Parish at Hawthorne, Calif. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1958.

She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education She received a master’s degree in theology from Dominican College of San Rafael.

Indiana ministries:

• Terre Haute: teacher, St. Patrick School (1957-1958).

• Indianapolis: teacher, St. Catherine School (1958-1960).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: Infirmary staff (1974-1975).

Gansemer also ministered in Texas, Illinois and California.



Sister Marilyn Rose Ginder is a native of Montgomery, Ind. She currently ministers in prayer at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Ginder entered the Congregation Feb. 2, 1949, from St. Roch Parish in Indianapolis. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1956.

She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in Latin. She received a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Notre Dame, and a doctorate in counseling psychology, also from the University of Notre Dame. She received a master’s degree in pastoral theology from St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Indiana ministries:

• Indianapolis: teacher, Nativity School (1956-1958); Ladywood High School (1962-1965); post-doctoral internship, Midtown Comprehensive Mental Health Center (1972-1973); director and assistant professor of clinical psychology, Midtown Comprehensive Mental Health Center (1973-1982); provincial administrator and private practice, St. Gabriel Province (1982-1986); assistant professor of clinical psychology, private practice (1986-2002); spiritual direction (2003-2004).

• Vincennes: principal and teacher, St. Rose and Cathedral schools (1965-1967).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: volunteer, Ministry of Care staff (2004-2005); volunteer (2005-2006).

Sister Marilyn Rose also ministered in Illinois.



Sister Jeanne Knoerle is a native of Lakewood, Ohio. She currently ministers as a volunteer at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and White Violet Center for Eco-Justice at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Knoerle, formerly known as Sister Mary Gregory, entered the Congregation July 22, 1949, from St. Angela Parish at Fairview Village, Ohio. She professed perpetual vows Jan. 23, 1957.

She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in drama. She received a master’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in business from Indiana University. She received a doctorate in composition and literary Chinese from Indiana University.

Indiana ministries:

• Fort Wayne: teacher, Central Catholic High School (1952-1953).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods College: faculty (1954-1956 and 1957-1963); assistant president (1967-1968); president (1968-1983); chancellor (1984-1998); director of endowment funding (1984-1985); president of Woods Association (1985-1988).

• Indianapolis: program director for the religious division, Lilly Endowment (1988-1998); consultant to the religious division, Lilly Endowment (1998-2003).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: acting executive director and executive director, Residential Life and Services (2003-2008).

Sister Jeanne also ministered in Illinois, Washington D.C. and Taiwan.



Sister Marie Denis Lucey is a native of Brighton, Mass. She currently ministers as a volunteer at Woods Day Care/Pre-School at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Lucey entered the Congregation July 22, 1949, from Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Greenwood, Mass. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1957.

She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Indiana ministries:

• Indianapolis: teacher, St. Ann School (1952 and 1958); St. Philip Neri School (1955-1957); St. Joan of Arc School (1958-1961).

Lucey also ministered in Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
