Three Sisters of Providence celebrate 75th anniversary

TERRE HAUTE — Three Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods recently celebrated their 75th anniversary as members of the Congregation. They are Sisters Jane Bodine, Beatrice Hoberg and Catherine Livers.  

Sister Bodine is a native of St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village. She currently ministers in prayer at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Jane, the former Sister Janet, entered the Congregation Jan. 9, 1937, from St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Parish. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1945. She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in physics. She received a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame.

Indiana ministries include:

• Jasper: teacher, St. Joseph School (1939-1944).

• Evansville: teacher, Assumption School (1945-1950).

• Clarksville: teacher, Our Lady of Providence High School (1953-1954 and 1957-1962).

• Indianapolis: teacher, Ladywood School (1955-1957); director of adult education (1970-1978), teacher (1970-1072); principal, St. Patrick School (1972-1973); first provincial councilor and director of apostolic works, St. Gabriel Providence (1978-1981); director of development education program for religious communities (1988-1996); consultant, board of Global Education Associates (New York, 1994-1996); coordinator of Ladywood Alumnae (1994-1996 and 1997-2006); executive director, Hispanic Education Center (1997-1999). Fort Wayne: teacher, Central Catholic High School (1962-1964); assistant principal (1970).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: director of development (1981-1987); Archives volunteer (2005-2006); Residential Services staff (2007-2011).

Bodine also ministered in Illinois and Missouri.

Sister Hoberg is a native of Chicago. She currently ministers in prayer at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Beatrice, the former Sister Mary Canice, entered the Congregation from St. Frances of Rome Parish in Cicero. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1945. She graduated from SMWC with a bachelor’s degree in music. She received a master’s degree in music from the University of Cincinnati. She co-authored the nationally known To God Through Music Series and was co-author of “The Story of Anne-Therese.”

Indiana ministries include:

• Whiting: teacher, Sacred Heart School (1955-1956); St. John the Baptist School (1956-1965).

• Indianapolis: teacher, Holy Cross School (1939-1942, 1945-1951 and 1952-1955); Immaculate Heart of Mary School (1951-1952).

• Terre Haute: assistant director of activities (1980-1981), director of activities (1981-1982), program director (1982-1984), Simeon House.

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: Providence Center staff (1996-1999); Residential Services Staff (1999-2006).

Hoberg also ministered in Illinois and California.

Sister Livers is a native of Loogootee. She currently serves in outreach ministry at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Catherine, the former Sister Agatha, entered the Congregation June 29, 1937, from St. John Parish in Loogootee. She professed perpetual vows Jan. 23, 1946. She graduated from SMWC with a bachelor’s degree in education. She received a master’s degree in education from Indiana State University and a master’s degree in ministries from Seattle University.

Indiana ministries include:

• Fort Wayne: teacher, St. Augustine School (1942-1945).

• Jasper: teacher, Precious Blood School (1958-1960).

• Vincennes: teacher, St. John School (1960-1966).

• Indianapolis, teacher and principal, St. Patrick School (1966-1969); pastoral associate and special assignment (1969-1973) and personal consultant (1974-1980), St. Gabriel Province (1969-1973); chaplain, Methodist Hospital (1973-1974); director Shalom Center (1984-1987); staff member, Fatima Retreat House (1988-1989).

• Terre Haute: volunteer, St. Ann Clinic (2002 and 2007-2008).

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods: Ministry of Care staff (2002-2006); spiritual direction and retreat director (2006-2012).

Livers also ministered in Illinois, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, New York and Kentucky.
