Sisters of Providence join Year of River celebration; plan Taize prayer gatherings

TERRE HAUTE — The Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods are joining in partnership with the 2013 Year of the River celebration.

Many of the Congregation’s annual events will have a Year of the River theme with prayer, information, educational opportunities and entertainment focused on the Wabash River and the roles other waterways have in Earth’s overall health and welfare.

One of the initial opportunities is planned for Jan. 8. The Sisters of Providence will open a monthly series of Taize prayer gatherings.

“The Lack of Potable Water in the World” is the theme for the hour-long service which begins at 7 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. It is open to the public and to people of all faith traditions.

Taize prayer was formed in France by a group of ecumenical brothers, including Catholics and Protestants. The prayer form includes silence, spoken prayer, meditation and music that is incorporated with traditional prayers offered in ecumenical groups. This prayer style is particularly popular with younger people.

The Congregation’s version will include sung prayers, simple and beautiful music, a time of silence and spoken and silent prayers. The prayer is quiet and reflective, deeply peaceful and joyful. The prayer space is lit primarily by candlelight.

Other Taize prayer opportunities will be offered: Feb. 19, Thirst; March 12, Spring Rains: Climate Change; April 9, Waters of Baptism; May 14, Water Pollution; June 11, Flowing River; July 9, Wasted Water; Aug. 13, Drought; Sept. 10, Joy of the River; Oct. 8, St. Mother Theodore Guerin and the Wabash River; Nov. 12, Wabashiki and the Native Peoples; Dec. 10, Healing Water.

For more information contact Sister Paula Damiano, coordinator of programming at Providence Spirituality and Conference Center, at pdamiano@spsmw.org or at 812-535-2926.

The Sisters of Providence also will have specific information and activities for the Year of the River during Earth Day on April 20, Family Day on June 9 and the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest on Oct. 19. In addition, a display will be offered soon in the Congregation’s Heritage Museum in Providence Center.
