Sunday, Dec. 11 at 10:30 – In the Spirit of the Season: Engaging Love and Compassion – Jean Kristeller - A universal aspect of religion is valuing our capacity for extending compassion, selfless love, and caring to others.

Opening our hearts, giving to others, letting go of pain we may have received - and extending compassion to ourselves, are timeless qualities but particularly important to reflect on during this Christmas season. Compassion is increasingly being explored from a psychological and spiritual perspective, and this presentation will consider some of the many ways compassion can carry meaning in our daily lives.

Jean Kristeller is a psychologist who was a founding director of the ISU Center for the Study of Health, Religion, and Spirituality, and has been active as a clinical, teacher, and researcher in the areas of spirituality, well-being and meditation. She has also written extensively on the psychology of religion and on Buddhist psychology.

Children’s Religious Education begins at 10:50 - There are two groups, youth ages 5 to 9 and Tweens, ages 10 and up. Childcare for younger children is provided for the entire service.

How did the church grow and spread? The book of Acts provides answers to these questions as it gives the history of the early church. The advent season continues this week with Sunday School at 9 a.m. and Worship Service at 10:15 a.m. Our Advent/Christmas theme is “Worth Waiting For” and this Sunday Pastor Bernie Jackson will speak on the topic “Waiting for Fulfillment” with scripture text from John 1:1-18. Music will be provided by The Sanctuary Choir as they sing “A Celtic Gloria” by Joseph Martin. Special music will also be presented by The Children’s Choir and The Sanctuary Bell Choir. Instrumental music will be provided by Julie Dugger, playing an arrangement of “The Coventry Carol” for solo oboe and piano. The third candle on the advent wreath - the candle of joy - will be lit by the children of the church. Children’s Church is provided during the month of December for all children in grades k-5 and pre-school Sunday School and extended care is available throughout the morning. Members and guests are invited to enjoy a cup of fresh Rex coffee and light refreshments in the First Link Hospitality Room from 8:45 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.

A Christmas Vesper Service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon with Lessons and Carols provided by The First Baptist Senior Singers. This service is based on traditional Christmas Eve Service that has held each year since 1918 at the Kings College in Cambridge, England. Following the service there will be a soup and sandwich buffet supper served in Esken Hall hosted by the church social committee. Other upcoming events include: the Sanctuary Choir cantata “Tapestry of Light” presented on Sunday morning, Dec. 18 at 10:15 a.m., the Candlelight Service Dec. 24 at 6 p.m. and a casual, family oriented service on Christmas Day at 10:15 a.m.

First Baptist Church is an American Baptist congregation located at 4701 E. Poplar Drive. Further information regarding our church and ministries can be found on the website at www.thfbc.org.
