St. Mary-of-the-Woods — The Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods have announced a schedule of Advent services as a prelude to the Christmas season.
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and it is a time of preparation for the coming of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus. Traditionally, the season is marked with an Advent wreath and special prayers.
The Advent wreath blessing, accompanied by a prayer service, is at 4 p.m. today, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Advent Vespers are scheduled Sunday, Dec. 6, 13 and 20 in St. Joseph Chapel in Owens Hall at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Service time is 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.
Vespers is the evening prayer of the Church. The sisters will gather at this time and invite others to join them in praising God for the blessings of the day and asking God for assistance during the coming night. It is an opportunity to pray the psalms in song in an ecumenical spirit and to reflect on the Advent season’s scripture readings.
All prayer services are open to the public and to people of all faith traditions.
