TERRE HAUTE — Once again, the season changes from warm and sunny to chilly and dark. Most of us sense the need to prepare and to take stock of resources that will hold us over until spring returns. For some, the fast-approaching holiday season creates additional challenges.
A team of friends and members at First Unitarian Universalist Congregation is seeking support and is asking for participation by others in the local interfaith community to jump-start the season of giving. For the second year in a row, efforts are under way to coordinate a “Tea for 2,000” event from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. The goal is to raise awareness of hunger in the community and to solicit items on behalf of the Grumbling Tummies Cafe, an outreach program that feeds children at the 14th and Chestnut Community Center.
Several area organizations have agreed to work collectively on the Tea for 2,000 project. Participating groups include Central Christian Church, First Congregational Church, United Hebrew Congregation, St. Mark’s United Church of Christ, Ryves Hall Preschool, Wabash Valley Friends Meeting (Quakers) and First Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
Just like last year, there will be refreshments in the way of holiday tea, coffee, hot cider and finger foods for free to all who arrive bearing one or more non-perishable food items. “The Madrigal Singers” from Terre Haute North Vigo High School, who sang last year, are on the docket to perform several favorite tunes to create a joy-filled atmosphere. A local acoustical group, Women of Erin, and the choir from First Unitarian Universalist also will entertain.
“Last year was so successful,” commented Tea for 2,000 committee chairperson Bettie Cooper. “We want to do it again because it’s especially about feeding children.”
Committee member Julie Young stated: “At Thanksgiving time, it’s great to share our bounty. We appreciate the other faith communities who join us.”

I have a collection of manger scenes. Seventeen, as a matter of fact. A small one, about two inches by three, was purchased in the Holy Land and is carved out of olive wood. It was given to me a couple of weeks ago by a dear friend (thank you, Norma) because she wanted to add to my collection.
