First United Methodist celebrates 100 years

The First United Methodist Church of Marshall is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the dedication of its present church building with a homecoming and re-dedication service on Sunday.

The church is at Seventh and Plum streets across from the post office.

The celebration will begin with the morning service at 9 a.m. and continue with a fellowship dinner and sharing of memories at 11:30 a.m. A group picture and a service of re-dedication will conclude the day at 2 p.m.

First United Methodist Church was organized in Marshall in 1841 by lay preacher Abel English as the Methodist Church. The present Bedford stone building is the third church structure of the congregation and the second structure on the present site. It was completed in 1908 and dedicated in March 1909. One of the features of the church is the Hinners tracker action pipe organ that was largely financed by the sale of candy and cookies made by the Sunday School class of young women. Rev. Harry Tingley, great-great-great-grandson of Abel English will be featured organist for the re-dedication service.

An addition to the church building was completed in 1988 consisting of office space, chapel, elevator, rest rooms and storage space.
