The Word for the Week: Here is a challenge for the new year. Some folks portray the Christian life as a bowl of cherries or a bed of roses. “Come to Christ,” they may say, “and your troubles will be over.” Well, it’s not so. Someone forgot to pit the cherries and to remove those thorns from that bed of roses. In like manner, when you become a Christian, all your problems do not magically disappear. In fact, conversion to Christ may intensify your problems. Not everyone appreciates the followers of Christ. Don’t let this frighten you from the Savior.

Christ teaches you how to cope with your problems. Christ also supports and strengthens you in the midst of your problems. In addition, He personally comforts you. To experience this guidance, strength, support, and comfort in the midst of the challenges of life, you must entrust yourself to God.

No one on this earth has endured more pain and suffering than Jesus Christ. Yet, as the Bible tells us, “While being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 2:23). In the midst of suffering, Christ trusted His Father for comfort and strength to cope. This is what we need to do in the midst of our problems and challenges. We need to entrust ourselves to God.

Please join us for worship this Sunday. The Rev. Dan Deason will be preaching. The Terre Haute Reformed Presbyterian Church meets in the Church building at the South-East corner of Sixth and Washington (1400 S. Sixth St.) in Terre Haute. United Methodist Temple

The church at 5301 S. U.S. 41 continues the Epiphany journey with worship at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. every Sunday. This coming Sunday we emphasize the humility required to exercise wisdom in life. With John the Baptist as example, following the lectionary reading of Mark 1:4-11, we will learn about humility. Humility is necessary for growth, for change, for life. Without it, we tend to end up in the ruts of self righteousness, the malaise of moralism, the deadend of defeat, and the cul-de-sacs of culture. We isolate and lose contact with the essence of life. Without curiosity, too contented to question, we stop learning, and start dying. We cease to challenge ourselves. Our only commitment is to convenience. The solution to all of this: an exciting relationship to the subversive Risen Jesus, the One sent by God to teach us love. Our Lord is the Risen Lord of Life, whose birth, life, death, and Resurrection calls us out of our egotisms and into service and relationship.

Every Sunday at 10 a.m. we study the Bible and Christian books that help us to come closer to and serve ur Lord more closely. A new book study is starting at UM Temple called Rediscovering Values on Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street - by Jim Wallis. This book is a great book for our economic and spiritual lives right now. We need to move from the “it’s all about me” to “we’re in this together” because we can not just survive this crisis but must build a better world for the next seven generations. God’s message is: “There is enough-if we share it.” This book study will be taught by Dinah Farrington and George Bakker and all are welcome to come and get in on the lively discussion. Come to our Welcome Cafe at 10 right after the first service, get some coffee, and move on up to the Faithlinks class. You will be blessed.

Health is happening here. Salvation goes hand in hand with healthy mind, body, and soul. Worship and praise of God is essential to true health. Monday at 12:15 p.m., we will be initiating our Celebrate Recovery for all those who need help with hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Do you like to ring and sing? We have bell choir practice starting Thursday this week at 6 p.m. Choir will start at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and we need tenors and sopranos, basses and baratones, and any who will come and join us in leading our congregation into worship. Every Thursday at 10 a.m. our Piecemakers meet to prepare quilts for our prayer quilt ministry. Every Friday we have Christian Yoga at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall, led by Macy Kalb. Soon we will offer Zumba twice a week. God has made us to move, and when we move God graces us with balance and equilibrium, service and energy. Come and learn how to worship with your whole self the God of creation, salvation, and inspiration.
