Terre Haute Reformed

Presbyterian

The Word for the Week:

Why was Jesus born? Did He desire to push His way to the head of the table of this universe? Was His mission to garner adoration and praise? Was this uppermost in His mind? This was not the case. He came to serve.

“Although He existed in the form of God, [He] did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:6-8).

The Second Person of Trinity entered creation as the babe in Bethlehem to be a ransom payment. In the ancient economy, a benevolent master might buy a slave for a stated price. He then might grant the slave freedom. The purchase price ransoms this burdened soul from a life of servitude.

Christ’s perfect life and subsequent death is a ransom payment loosing sinners from their slavery to evil conduct. With this ransom payment, God “rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13).

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

Please join us for worship this Sunday. The title of Pastor Bill Roberts sermon on Revelation is: “The River of Life and the Tree of Life.” The Terre Haute Reformed Presbyterian Church meets in the church building at the South-East corner of 6th and Washington (1400 South 6th St.). Josephs dream changed his mind and life from good to best. Larry will point how this event can give you insight into your own heart.

At 6 p.m., a time of singing Christmas Carols, giving testimonies, and a solo by Janet Rose followed by Larry’s sermon, In God’s Time. Larry will emphasize the importance of the phrase by Paul, “fullness of time.” Knowing this can give you patience and courage in life’s trying times.

United Methodist Temple

United Methodist Temple delights in discipleship at its building at 5301 S. U.S. 41. United Methodist Temple invites all to come and share in the worship of the Child born to save us all, to become disciples of the true God who entered humanity to defeat death and evil once and for all.

As we prepare for the fourth Sunday in Advent, we follow the theme of “outside the box” thinking. Jesus was born outside the frame, in a tiny little backwater, outside the box of dominant culture.

We all received stones with the word “expect” in the first Sunday in Advent, and were instructed to expect great things from God, just as the Israelites expected, waited, longing for a Messiah.

n the second Sunday in Advent, we all received stones saying “accept”  and we were encouraged to accept the greatest gift,  God having come as a human baby, to live with, love with, and fight for, all of us, in our human struggle.

On the third Sunday, we all received a stone with the word “family”  and we were reminded how the Body of Christ is a forever family, and constantly extending that family through solidarity with the whole human race, through radical hospitality.

This Sunday we will have a single service at 10:30 a.m. We will receive the rock marked “light” and be reminded through reading and cantata, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. We are called to be conduits and conveyers of that light.  The cantata is titled “Tapestry of Light.”

We will be inspired to share the light of Christ with everyone we know, and overcome the darkness with light.

We are a “Tapestry of Light” created by God to glorify him throughout the earth by service and sacrifice. We cannot keep this good news to ourselves.

Sunday, Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m. we will be gathering for our youth lock-in. Please call the office at (812) 299-1898 and talk to Margaret Fulsom or Jill Kuckewich if you wish to be involved in this all night fun and fellowship for youth.

Our Christmas schedule is exciting. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, we will be having our traditional Candlelight Service at 7 p.m. All are welcome to join us for this great service of worship. We will be having a Christmas Taize Communion at 11:30 p.m., with music led by the Sperry Family. Come and join us to sing in the day of Jesus birth.

On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, we offer two opportunities for worship.  Simple worship will happen at 11 a.m., in a simple service of carols and reading and preaching.

At 5 p.m., we will be gathering for a more musical gathering, this especially for those who have Christmas morning traditions. Please join us for any or all of these worship services as we honor the Season of the Child, the one who promises “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men,” the Babe of Bethlehem.

United Methodist Temple staff can be reached at (812) 299-1898, or by emailing Margaret Fulsom, our secretary at thumt@frontier.com or Rev. Steve Cain at (812) 870-5749 or revscain@yahoo.com.

Breden Memorial United Methodist

The message for this 4th Sunday of Advent will be: “They Called Him … Everlasting Father.” The scripture is recorded in Luke 2:1-8.

The words everlasting and eternal mean “always will be.” This is hard to explain and comprehend.

To try and explain to anyone that God has always been and will forever be is hard to grasp. When you try to tell a small child that God created all things you may get that message across. But then many children ask, “Where did God come from?” and we all get stumped on that one.

Faith must play a big role in our understanding of God. Many adults believe that Christians try to make faith too easy. Jesus said, “We as adults need to approach the kingdom like the small child does.” Enough said. Our worship service begins at 9:30. Sunday school follows immediately after worship at 10:50. AA meets on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Ladies’ Prayer Group meets Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

First Congregational

First Congregational Church, 630 Ohio, in Terre Haute, invites you to join us this Sunday, Dec. 18, as Rev. Dawn Carlson completes the Advent series with “The Greatest Love.”

Stories of God’s love, care and redemption fill the Bible, but no act of love was greater than that expressed in John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He sent His only Son. Join us as we explore this amazing gift – the gift of the Savior.

Church services are at 8:30 (meditative) and 10:30 (traditional) each Sunday morning. Children’s Church is part of the 10:30 service and then children are invited to attend Sunday School downstairs. There is a staffed nursery during the 10:30 service.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m., we invite all in our community to join us for the Longest Night/Blue Christmas service.

This service is an opportunity for those who are dealing with grief or family crises and find Christmas a less than joyous time. Our Annual Candlelight Christmas Eve service will be on Dec. 24 at 7 p.m.

You are invited to arrive between 6 and 7 p.m. and share in the wassail bowl. Christmas Day’s Sunday service will be just one, joint service at 9:30 a.m.
