Sisters of Providence schedule Advent services

WEST TERRE HAUTE — The Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods have announced a schedule of Advent services as a prelude to the Christmas season.

Advent began on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas (Dec. 2 this year), a time of preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Traditionally, the season is marked with an Advent wreath and special music and prayers. All services are open to people of all faith traditions.

Remaining Eucharistic liturgies will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday and Dec. 16 and 23 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the Sisters of Providence Senior Jubilee will be celebrated with Eucharistic liturgy at 11 a.m. today. Eleven sisters will celebrate their Diamond Jubilee, four sisters their 70th jubilee, three sisters their 75th jubilee, and one sister will celebrate her 80th jubilee.

Advent Vespers is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16 and Dec. 23. Vespers is the evening prayer of the church. The sisters will gather at this time and invite others to join them in praising God for the blessings of the day and asking God for assistance during the coming night. It is an opportunity to pray the psalms in song in an ecumenical spirit and to reflect on the Advent season’s scripture readings.

Sunday Brunch and The Gift Shop at Providence Center are open Sunday and Dec. 16. Brunch hours are 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sunday Brunch is closed on Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. The Gift Shop is open between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
