Sisters of Providence announce schedule for Advent services

The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods have announced a schedule of Advent services as a prelude to the Christmas season.

Advent begins on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas (Dec. 2 this year) and it is a time of preparation to celebrate the anniversary of the incarnate God of love coming into the world. Traditionally, the season is marked with an advent wreath and special music and prayers.

All liturgies and prayer services are open to the public and to people of all faith traditions.

Eucharistic Liturgies on the four Sundays of Advent, which are Dec. 2, Dec. 9,

Dec. 16 and Dec. 23, are at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The

Blessing of the Advent Wreath will take place during the liturgy on December 2, the first Sunday of Advent.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the Sisters of Providence Senior Jubilee will be celebrated with Eucharistic Liturgy at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Eleven sisters will celebrate their Diamond Jubilee, four sisters their 70th Jubilee, three sisters their 75th Jubilee, and one sister will celebrate her 80th Jubilee.

Advent Vespers are scheduled on December 9, December 16 and December 23 in the Church from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no Vespers on December 2 in order that all may attend the Christmas Concert sponsored by St. Mary-of-the-Woods College at 3 p.m. in the Church.

Vespers is the evening prayer of the Church. The sisters will gather at this time and invite others to join them in praising God for the blessings of the day and asking God for assistance during the coming night. It is an opportunity to pray the psalms in song in an ecumenical spirit and to reflect on the Advent season’s scripture readings.

Sunday Brunch and The Gift Shop at Providence Center are open Dec. 2, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16. Brunch hours are 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sunday Brunch is closed on December 23 and December 30. The Gift Shop is open between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
