Terre Haute Reformed Presbyterian

The Word for the Week:

Once upon a time, folks assumed they followed the Ten Commandments. When you talked to them about sin, they said, “I’m not so bad. I keep the Ten Commandments.” Now there is aversion to the Ten Commandments. Churches stand against God’s law. They often misapply the Bible with Romans 6:14, “You are not under law but under grace.” Others declare they don’t want to push the Ten Commandments on impressionable youngsters. Posting these moral precepts on the walls of schoolrooms is anathema.

The Bible says, “the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good” (Romans 7:12). The Ten Commandments are precepts to follow. They also are a life to live. First, the Ten Commandments outline the holiness of God. Second, the Ten Commandments therefore define deviations from His holiness and righteousness. The Ten Commandments show our need to return to God through faith in Christ. “The Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ” (Galatians 3:24). Third, because the Ten Commandments show us the character of God and deviations from His holiness, they also set the parameters for godly living. God says, “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2).

The new year challenge is to return to God through faith in Christ and live out the Ten Commandments with His power and grace.

Join us for worship this Sunday. Pastor Bill Robert will begin a new series and his sermon title is, “Knowing God.” The Terre Haute Reformed Presbyterian Church meets in the Church building at the South-East corner of 6th and Washington (1400 South 6th St.). Sunday School, for children and adults, begins at 9:30 a.m. and worship begins at 10:45 a.m. A nursery for children three and under is available during the worship service. After worship a meal will be provided and all are welcome to stay for food and fellowship.

Refreshments and fellowship follow the worship service, from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Sunday School classes are offered to all age groups and nursery care is provided. The mind and heart need a time of silence and rest and our chapel is the perfect place to find both of these. Along with this peace, one can find a good book from our library to increase our appreciation of our Catholic faith and to enhance our prayer life in this busy world. Adoration is a greater necessity than having an economic upturn because it will help our country to have a moral upturn. We are located at 1807 Poplar St. For further information call the parish office at (812) 232-8518.

Christ’s glowing affirmation of John in spite of John’s down time emotionally is one of the greatest passages in the Bible to visit when you are down for one reason or another. Breden Memorial United Methodist

The law of the day in Jesus’ time was “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But Jesus introduced grace and mercy and forgiveness. Remember how they critized Him: “Wait a minute. Only God can forgive.”

But Jesus said, “No, you can forgive! All of us can forgive! In fact, we ought to forgive; we ought to imitate the forgiving spirit of God in our dealings!” And Jesus was right!

If you ever wonder, Should I forgive? remember the picture of Jesus on the Cross, saying, “Father, forgive them. They know not what they are doing.” That is our measuring stick for forgiveness.

Then Jesus came saying, “You can forgive. It’s O.K. to forgive. Indeed, it’s beautiful to forgive.” But the powers in control at that time didn’t want the door opened, so they began to plot to silence Him.

The First Link Hospitality Room is available every Sunday morning from 8:45 until 10:15 to provide a place where members and guests can share a cup of freshly brewed Rex coffee, light refreshments and conversation.

On Sunday evening at 6 p.m. our youth are hosting a game night in Esken Hall. Join us inside for miniature golf, a bounce house, and board games. There will also be an all you can eat hot dog bar. The event is a fundraiser for our coming summer trips/conferences. Everyone is invited to join us for this time of food, fellowship and fun. First Congregational

First Congregational Church, 630 Ohio in Terre Haute, invites you to join us this Sunday as Rev. Dawn Carlson shares the sermon, “Drop Everything?”

When Jesus called His disciples, He called them to drop everything and follow. Join us on Sunday morning as we discuss what it means to 21st century Christians to drop everything and follow.

Church services are at 8:30 (meditative) and 10:30 (traditional) each Sunday morning. Children’s Church is part of the 10:30 service and then children are invited to attend Sunday School downstairs. There is a staffed nursery during the 10:30 service.

On Sunday evening, we will be having our monthly Dialogue at St. Arbucks at 6 p.m. at 25th and Wabash. We will continue the discussion of discipleship for today at this casual gathering.

First Congregational Church is a member of the National and Midwest Associations of Congregational Christian Churches, founded on the principles of “Faith, Freedom & Fellowship.”

Join us at Terre Haute’s longest continuously worshipping congregation, now marking our 178th year of worship and service. There’s a place here for you. For more informatio
