Reformed Presbyterian
Here is another new year challenge. The Bible exhorts, “Discipline yourself for the purpose of Godliness,” (1 Timothy 4:7). Does this seem strange? It shouldn’t. The word discipline in our English Bibles is the word from which we derive “gymnasium” and “gymnastics.” Gymnasts must do their routines over and over again. The same goes for those involved in skating, skiing, tennis, golf, or active in team sports like football or basketball. Practice, practice, practice. That’s the name of the game.
Christianity is no different. Discipline yourself. Do you have a problem getting into the Bible? Work at it. Set aside a time each day and get in the habit of reading your Bible. It takes discipline. The same goes for prayer. Practice prayer. Discipline yourself and pray regularly. Keep a written prayer list and check off God’s answers to your prayers. Does a bad habit often trip you? Discipline yourself. “Flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace” (2 Timothy 2:22). Turn away from the temptation. Work on forming new habits. Discipline yourself.
Here is the catch. You don’t do this alone. Christianity differs from pep talks from coaches and exhortations from teachers. The Bible says the gospel is “the power of God” (Romans 1:16). Think about it. Christianity is the power of God at work in you to enable you to discipline yourself.

Along with this peace, one can find a good book from our library to increase our appreciation of our Catholic faith and to enhance our prayer life in this busy world. Sunday at 10:30 a.m. - Founding a Christian Nation? Religion, the First Presidents, and the Early U. S. – Sam Martland – What exactly did the people who wrote the constitution and set up the United States government think about religion? What did they mean by banning congress from making laws about religion, but implicitly letting states support churches? (Massachusetts supported Unitarian churches until 1833!) Why should we care what these “framers” thought about church and state? Sam Martland, looks at the Rev. Forrest Church’s books on the topic and adds his own suggestions from the perspective of a Bostonian, a former member of the First Congregational Society of Jamaica Plain (Unitarian), and a historian of government in Latin America. SA: Rich House.

So, “come and see” for yourself what Christ is calling us to do. Scripture: John 1:43-51

Please keep us in prayer as we go through this important wisdom process. All our members are expected to be present for worship, and any of the other events in the weekend that they can attend.
This Sunday we will be celebrating Human Relations Day. The Scripture this week comes from Proverbs 11:14 and John 1:43-51. Pastor Steve will be bringing a message entitled “Come and See The Future.” When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, and Phillip, and Phillip called Nathanael, a process of advertising that is the most successful in the world was implemented: word of mouth. This is the cheapest yet the most effective. Each one of us has the potential to reach someone who is waiting for an invitation to know God in Christ. Even if that is just an invitation to church, a quick prayer, a hug, or a serious conversation and more significant help, what we do we do because of a Living Jesus Christ. Valuing who we are in Christ, putting that relationship above all others, knowing that we have a heavenly home awaiting us, our faith grows and we thrive.
When we live in intimate connection with our God, we have access to God the Father through Christ, and we share news of the Messiah, the Anointed One, our Savior, with others. Though hardship, darkness, difficulty come, we extend the SHALOM of God as an act of worship We serve others, and in serving look for opportunities to speak a work of loving invitation to those we meet. We invite all to get to know the Lord whose love permeates the Cosmos. We work for a boss who is never too hard on us, always equipping us for any task he assigns, and always offering the rest that we need.
At UM Temple, we celebrate the beginning of a new ministry. Every Monday from 12:15 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. we offer a 2 hour Celebrate Recovery meeting for those who wish to deal with their habits, hurts, and hang-ups. We will be creating two addiction groups (male and female) and two codependency groups (male and female.)
