RAMBLIN' RECK: Castroneves a safe bet at Indy 500

TERRE HAUTE — The field is full for the Indianapolis 500 and the race should be another good one.

Ryan Briscoe is on the pole after edging James Hinchcliffe by .0023 seconds, averaging 226.484 miles per hour while Hinchcliffe had 226.481.

Both of those runs were made in the nine-driver Shootout after initial qualifying runs had been made. Hinchcliffe was on the pole after his first run and Briscoe was fifth.

The Shootout adds drama to Pole Day when the first 24 spots were filled in the race, especially with the car count down this year.

Who do we like to win? We like Helio Castroneves, who will start sixth and will be shooting for his record-tying fourth victory at Indy. We think he will do it.

If Helio does not do it, we’d like to see Tony Kanaan, Will Power, Briscoe or Scott Dixon do it.

• Leaders — Some high school baseball players are among the state leaders going into the final regular-season and sectional games this week:

Batting average — Jeff Woods of Turkey Run, fifth, .545.

Home runs — Brian Dale of Cloverdale, tied for second, 8; Tony Rosselli of Terre Haute North, tied for eighth, 6.

RBIs — Austin Mannan of Cloverdale, tied for second, 36; Rosselli, tied for ninth, 32.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — South Putnam takes a 50-game winning streak into the state softball tournament this week, going for a repeat Class 2A state championship.

Coach Chris Jones had told us it would be 48 in a row last week after the Eagles concluded a 25-0 season but corrected that figure. Either figure is pretty amazing.

• Jordan Grooms of Marshall, Ill., plans to attend Wabash College and play baseball.

• Michael Brooks has resigned as girls basketball coach at Warren Central to pursue a school administrative position.

He had a 74-21 mark in four seasons at the school.

• Stanford Robinson, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Virginia, has given his commitment to be part of the Class of 2013 at Indiana University.

• Former Center Grove cager Jonny Marlin says he will leave IPFW and be a walk-on at IU, where he will sit out a year and have three years of eligibility.

• Evansville Bosse standout Jason Pendleton is going to Southern Illinois. He averaged 21.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists for Bosse last season.

• Greencastle’s boys golf team is enjoying a stellar season. The Tiger Cubs won the Putnam County match by 26 shots and took West Central Conference honors by 28 shots.

• North Knox baseball coach Bill Cary recently won his 400th game, and the Jasper girls tennis team won its 10th straight sectional.

• In the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, IU will host North Carolina while Purdue is at Clemson and Illinois is at home to Georgia Tech.

• Our sympathy goes to the family and friends of Alan Moore of Paris, Ill. He was a big Indiana State fan and often sat next to us at the harness races at the Edgar County Fair.
