RAMBLIN' RECK: Indiana Mr. Football still has big decision to make

TERRE HAUTE — Some awards in high school and college football were announced last week.

Gunner Keil, quarterback at Columbus East, was named Indiana’s Mr. Football. He received 29 of the 48 votes cast in the balloting conducted by The Indianapolis Star.

Keil originally had said he would go to Indiana but changed his mind. He likely will end up at LSU, Notre Dame, Southern Cal or Vanderbilt and will enroll in January since he will graduate early from high school.

Warren Central defensive tackle Sheldon Day was second in the voting with nine votes and two-way standout Danny Anthrop of Lafayette Central Catholic was third with eight votes.

Wisconsin junior running back Montee Ball edged Badger teammate and quarterback Russell Wilson for The Silver Football award given by The Chicago Tribune to the top player in the Big Ten.

Ball had four touchdowns in the conference championship game and 38 for the season, one off the national record. He was named on all 11 of the ballots cast by coaches.

In other high school football news, Mark Jaynes has resigned as coach at Monrovia, where he compiled a 9-13 mark in two seasons. He cited commitments to his family and to his work with Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In the college ranks, former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is the new coach at Kansas.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Paul Patterson, 69, the men’s basketball coach at Taylor, has won 700 games. He coached on the high school level and at two other colleges before going to Taylor.

Billy Donovan of Florida has won his 400th game, doing it quicker than any other active coach at 46.

• The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Springs Report is the Indiana golf course of the year.

• Horizon League members have voted to allow the $2,000 allowance for men’s and women’s basketball players.

• Indiana schools were included in USA Today high school polls last week.

Hamilton Southeastern was 18th in girls basketball and third in the Midwest Region while Indianapolis North Central was 24th nationally and fifth in the Midwest Region.

Carmel was eighth in football and first in the Midwest Region with Warren Central sixth and Indianapolis Cathedral 10th.

• Logan Cannady scored his 1,000th point last week for Marshall, Ill., as the Lions lost a tough game to Flora.

• Creighton reached the Final Four in men’s soccer last week for the fourth time and lost on penalty shots to NC-Charlotte. North Carolina defeated its state rival 1-0 in the championship game.

North Dakota State has reached the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision and will be host to Georgia Southern this week while Montana is at Sam Houston State.

Montana took out Northern Iowa 48-10 and North Dakota State bested Lehigh 24-0.
