Michael Allen is establishing quite a nice boys basketball coaching record for himself in Virginia.
He is the athletic director and coach at Norfolk Christian, which recently won its second straight Independent Division II championship.
North Carolina recruit James McAdoo was named MVP of the tournament and had 15 points — all in the second half — in the 59-45 victory over Middlesburg Academy in the championship game.
McAdoo set a tournament record with 44 points in the semifinals.
Norfolk Christian finished 25-8 and won 18 in a row to close the season.
Allen played his high school basketball at Shakamak and held the scoring record until it was broken by Billy Newton.
Herschell Allen, Michael’s dad, was his coach at Shakamak and also was an assistant on Don Jennings’ staff for the 1974 Terre Haute North baseball team that won the state.
He and his wife now spend most of their time in Florida. “I just got off the golf course. It’s about 80 degrees,” he said last week when calling about his son’s achievement.
• One left — Indianapolis North Central is the only Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference team left in the Indiana boys basketball tournament.
The Panthers will face Bloomington South in a Class 4A semistate game this week. No. 1 Munster meets Kokomo in the other 4A semistate contest.
North Central was the winner in what was the toughest regional last week, beating No. 7 Pike and No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern. The Panthers beat Pike without standout D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who was suspended one game by the IHSAA for his part in a sectional incident.
Hamilton Southeastern reached the regional title game by beating Center Grove, another MIC team.
• Hoop hits — Khristian Smith has committed to play basketball for Indiana State and just completed a banner season at Maine Central Institute.
The Indianapolis Star reports the former Pike player was named MVP in the New England Prepartory School Athletic Council Class AAA Tournament.
He had 28 points in one victory and 15 when his team beat top-seeded Brewster (N.H.).
• Terre Haute native Bob Leonard, member of the Indiana Pacers’ radio broadcast team, suffered a heart attack following Sunday’s game at New York. He was taken to a New York hospital and received two stents.
His condition was reported good by team officials.
• Paul Hewitt was let go as the coach at Georgia Tech following the team’s fourth losing season in six years.
Arkansas fired John Pelphrey, who was 69-59 in four seasons. The Razorbacks were 18-13 this season.
• Debbie Ryan resigned as women’s coach at Virginia. Her teams won 736 games in 34 years as she overcame pancreatic cancer.
• Northern Iowa will be the host team for a first-round College.Insider.com contest.
Missouri State and Wichita State both are in the NIT and have first-round home games. MSU meets Murray State tonight and WSU takes on Nebraska in a Wednesday game.
• In last week’s USA Today prep girls poll, Ben Davis was ranked 21st and Jeffersonville 24th. Ben Davis was No. 5 in the Midwest Region and Jeff was No. 7.
In the boys poll, Munster was No. 5 in the Midwest Region and North Central No. 8.
• In last week’s Sagarin rankings, Indiana State was still the third-ranked Missouri Valley team at 113. Wichita State was 64 and Missouri State 73 while UNI was 118.
Other teams and their rank: Ohio State 1, Purdue 7, Notre Dame 10, Butler 48, Indiana 102, IUPUI 132, Oral Roberts 135, Ball State 165.
• Officials in Anderson have voted to close the historic Wigwam, site of basketball games for years, due to budget cuts.
• Iowa State has announced that one of its transfer players is Korie Lucious of Michigan State. Another one is Anthony Booker of Southern Illinois.
