She averaged 16.1 points and 12 rebounds her senior year when she was chosen as a member of the Indiana All-Stars, the only player from Sullivan to earn that honor.
She played two years for ISU and is a regular at Sullivan games these days watching her son and daughter play for the Golden Arrows. Her Sullivan teammate Julie (Rotramel) Meeks previously was named to the Silver Anniversary Team.
Vanderkolk earned first-team all-state honors at Jeff and played four years at ISU. She scored 1,434 points and ranks seventh on the school’s career scoring list.
She earned Gateway Conference honors her junior and senior years and gained Academic All-America honors her senior season. She also was invited to take part in the Olympic Sports Festival.
Bobby Turner played football and served as coach for a time at Indiana State before going to the pros. He recently was named running backs coach and assistant coach for the Washington Redskins, reuniting him with Mike Shanahan, the new coach of the Redskins.
Turner was running backs coach for the Denver Broncos for 15 seasons, 14 under Shanahan, and the Broncos were leaders in yards gained in that time.
• Hoosier teams ranked — Indiana teams rank high in the weekly USA Today prep basketball lists.
Last week, Ben Davis was second in the country in the girls poll and first in the Midwest. The Giants are 16-0 and defeated Warren Central last week 61-37 after beating that same team by 12 points earlier in the year.
Floyd Central’s girls were 25th in the country and sixth in the Midwest.
Bloomington South was sixth in the country in the boys poll and third in the Midwest.
Indianapolis North Central was not ranked in that poll but took Marion County honors last week, beating Warren Central 71-52 in the finals and Lawrence North by four in the semis. The Panthers meet Lawrence North again this week.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — Scott Weaver and Shawn Turner put in a full day of officiating Saturday afternoon.
The pair worked together in the Shakamak-Tecumseh girls varsity game before making the trip to Illinois to do both the junior varsity and varsity games between Shakamak and Marshall boys, teaming with Jack Crapo in the varsity contest.
The games in Illinois and several other boys games around Indiana started earlier than usual in order to avoid a conflict with the Colts on television.
• Vincennes University recently defeated Cincinnati State in men’s basketball to record its 1,500th victory. VU became the fourth junior college team to gain that milestone.
Creighton coach Dana Altman won his 400th game last week.
• Taylor Duncan of Marshall, Ill., is a nominee for Old Spice Red Zone player-of-the-year honors in football.
He, of course, was quarterback for the Lions and is the leading scorer for the basketball team that is 11-3 after beating St. Joe-Ogden and Shakamak last weekend.
• Folks from the Wabash Valley recently competed in a 5K race, half-marathon and marathon in Florida. Tad Meyer, who now works in Washington, D.C., was in the half-marathon and marathon, placing 63rd in the marathon field which included world-class runners.
• Edinburgh High School has let Kyle Wheeler go as football coach. He had a 1-39 record in five seasons as the team snapped a 51-game losing streak last fall.
• Former Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Washington continues to have tough luck at North Carolina. He will miss a month or so with a broken foot.
A year ago, he missed 23 games with a wrist injury.
• Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Rachel Glandorf recently became engaged. McCoy took her to the football stadium to propose and got someone to put a message on the scoreboard screen for the event.
• The New York Times last week had a full-length story about Terre Haute North graduate Steve Weatherford, now punting for the New York Jets, after he missed the first playoff game.
He was in action Sunday and he and special teams coach Mike Westhoff — a former ISU aide — were on camera at one time on the sidelines.

RAMBLIN' RECK: Big Ten-ACC challenge gets under way tonight
Conference championship football games and challenge action in basketball will make for a busy week for college teams.
Wisconsin and Michigan State will meet in the very first Big Ten football championship Saturday at Indianapolis. Kickoff is 8 p.m. and the action will be carried by Fox.
Michigan State nipped the Badgers in the regular-season contest at East Lansing. We like Wisconsin to win and earn a trip to the Rose Bowl.
Other games and picks:
SEC — LSU over Georgia on Saturday
Mid-American — Northern Illinois over Ohio U. on Friday
Pac-12 — Oregon over UCLA on Friday
ACC — Virginia Tech over Clemson on Saturday
Conference USA — Houston over Southern Mississippi on Saturday
Western Kentucky will not play for a championship but the Hilltoppers won seven of their last eight games to finish with a winning mark. That’s the same team that lost to Indiana State, you will recall.
Meanwhile, the hiring and firing already has begun with Urban Meyer coming out of retirement to accept the job at Ohio State. That was a no-brainer.
Illinois is bowl-eligible but Ron Zook is out. Ditto for Turner Gill at Kansas and apparently Dennis Erickson at Arizona State.
In basketball, the first games in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge will be played tonight. The biggie tonight is Duke at Ohio State. Miami of Florida is at Purdue and Illinois plays at Maryland.
On Wednesday, Indiana is at North Carolina State, Wisconsin is at North Carolina and Michigan State goes to Florida State.
Indiana State is at Boise State on Saturday for a Missouri Valley-Mountain West Challenge game,
It was fun and gratifying to be able to watch the Sycamores on national television as they took third in the Old Spice Classic. The team got tons of favorable publicity and comments from the three games.
And what a game for Jake Odum and his triple-double. Wow.

n White honored — Taylor White of Casey has earned academic all-state honors in Illlinois football.
White was one of the top players at linebacker and fullback and was one of the captains on the team but did not play as the Warriors lost to Morrison in the Class 2A title tilt.
He was sidelined by injury in the game against Marshall and underwent surgery.
The Warriors gave Morrison all it wanted in the final game, concluding another banner season for coach Keith Sinclair and the team.
Nice work, Warriors.

n Tom-Cattin’ It — Carmel was the only public school to win a prep football championship in Indiana and was impressive in its 54-0 victory over Penn in the 5A finale.
Other winners — all private schools — were Lafayette Central Catholic in A, Fort Wayne Luers in 2A, Indianapolis Chatard in 3A, and Indianapolis Cathedral in 4A.
n Sullivan puts its undefeated girls basketball record on the line tonight at West Vigo. Its victory over Terre Haute South last week was its first over the Braves since 1992.
n Terre Haute North grad Steve Weatherford, now punting for the New York Giants, was featured in a nice story in The New York Times on Monday.
He was singled out for his conditioning program and called the strongest player pound for pound — at 210 pounds — on the team that met the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.
n Jim Rathman died last week at 83.
He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1960, edging Rodger Ward in a race in which there were a record 29 lead changes.
Rathman also was runner-up in the race in 1952, 1957 and 1959.
n Flora has been tabbed by one newspaper as the preseason pick to win the Little Illini Conference boys basketball championship and to make it to the Final Four.
The Wolves play Marshall, off to a 3-1 start, next week.
