Ramblin' Reck: Dischinger goes into Basketball Hall of Fame with 1960 Olympic team

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute’s Terry Dischinger will receive another honor this summer.

The former Garfield, Purdue and NBA standout will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team that won a gold medal.

Dischinger, of course, was a standout in four sports while attending Garfield High School, being named to the Indiana All-Stars in basketball, being all-state in football and running the hurdles in the state finals in track in addition to being on the Babe Ruth League baseball team that won a national title.

He made the Olympic team while a member of the Purdue team, starting three years for the Boilermakers and earning all-Big 10 honors all three seasons.

He played in the NBA for a time — being named rookie of the year his first season — and attended school at the same time to earn a degree in dentistry and settled in the state of Oregon where he still resides.

Some of the members of the 1960 team already have been inducted into the Hall as individuals. Dischinger now will join them.

The 1992 U.S. Olympic team also will be inducted. Larry Bird was on that team and has been inducted as an individual.

Some of the individuals who will be honored are Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone and Dennis Johnson.
