TERRE HAUTE —
The college football season got a lot more interesting with some surprising results last weekend.
Supposedly unbeatable Alabama was thumped by Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina team and dropped all the way from first to eighth in the USA Today poll voted on by coaches.
Ohio State is the new No. 1 team in all the polls and is followed, in order, by Oregon, Boise State, Nebraska and TCU in the USA Today poll. All of them are undefeated, as are No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Auburn, No. 9 LSU, No. 10 Utah and No. 11 Michigan State.
Since some of these teams will meet in the regular season, the list of unbeatens will continue to dwindle, meaning there could be some controversy regarding the national championship game, especially if Boise State does not lose a game.
In some key games this week, Ohio State is at Wisconsin, Oregon is at UCLA, Nebraska plays Texas, Auburn plays Arkansas and Michigan State plays Illinois. Illinois ruined Penn State’s Homecoming game by beating the Nittany Lions by 20 points last weekend, and earlier gave Ohio State a tough game.
Michigan and Iowa meet in another game that could be interesting in the Big Ten race.
• On the course — Chad Collins got off to a slow start in the McGladrey Classic last week, playing on the PGA Tour for the first time in more than a month, but finished strong to tie for 33rd place with a 6-under-par 274.
He earned $18,567 for his efforts to push his winnings for the year to $815,961. He ranks 105th on the money list.
One final junior golf tournament is slated in the state with an invitation-only field competing Saturday and Sunday in the Hoosier Junior Championship at Otter Creek at Columbus.
Two players in the field are Thomas Goss and Rachel Welker of Terre Haute.
The final men’s event of the season in the Wabash Valley is slated for Sunday with the Interclub Championship to be played at Geneva Hills. Play begins at 1 p.m.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — New members were approved for the Great Lakes Valley Conference last week.
McKendree College of Illinois will be a full member in the 2013-14 season.
Central State and Urbana will be associate members and compete in football, which will become a league sport.
Indianapolis and Southern Indiana are two members of the conference.
• It was good to see Royce Waltman named to the radio broadcast team with Don Fischer for Indiana basketball broadcasts. We understand he will be helping coach the Hamilton Southeastern boys team too.
• Derek Hannahs of Robinson, Ill., is enrolled at Ohio State where he will play baseball.
He had committed to Ball State but changed schools when the Ball State coach got the Ohio State job.
Jacob Hayes of Terre Haute South also is at Ohio State.
• Warren Central was ranked 21st in the USA Today national prep football poll last week and was second in the Midwest region.
In the rivalshigh.com list of top 100 teams in the country, Warren Central was 25th, Carmel 94th and Evansville Reitz 95th.
• Former Indiana State assistant track coach Bev Kearney, who now is at Texas-Arlington, was named as a new member of the Black Coaches and Administrators Association.
• Jesse Phibbs, 21, died last week as a results injuries sustained in motorcycle action at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in August. He was struck by another rider in a heat race.
• Two coaches who spoke at clinic for coaches last week in Indianapolis were Greg Lansing of Indiana State and Tom Crean of Indiana.
