RAMBLIN’ RECK: With the Super Bowl done, it’s time to focus on hoops

TERRE HAUTE — Now that the Super Bowl has been played, it’s time for what could be some super basketball games.

We’ll begin with Creighton’s visit to Hulman Center on Wednesday to play Indiana State. The Sycamores will be on the rebound from Saturday’s tough loss at Drake and will seek their fourth victory over a ranked, conference-leading team.

ISU also will take on Southern Illinois on Saturday in Hulman Center.

The ISU women got a split in road games last week and will be at home for a pair this week. The Sycamores hope to get back into the first division of the Missouri Valley Conference with a good homestand.

Rose-Hulman’s men’s team continues to win and has a home game against Franklin on Wednesday.

The Indiana Pacers were faced with playing three straight nights beginning with Monday’s game against Chicago — a makeup deal. They will be at home against Atlanta tonight and go to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Indiana is coming off a big win at Purdue and a super big win against Michigan and will be at Illinois on Thursday. This is a game the Hoosiers should win, but the Illini will be anxious to get things turned around after losing their fourth straight home game against Wisconsin on Sunday to fall to 2-7 in the Big Ten, having lost six of their past seven games.

Indiana and Illinois high school girls teams all have big games with postseason play beginning Monday in Illinois. Terre Haute North and South both play tonight in the South 4A Sectional and West Vigo takes on Greencastle at Brown County in Class 3A action.

Sullivan defeated Owen Valley last week to win the Western Indiana Conference girls title. One of the top first-round sectional games is slated for Wednesday with Sullivan facing Eastern in 2A action at Sullivan.

Meanwhile, the Sullivan boys can clinch no worse than a tie for the Western Indiana Conference championship by winning at West Vigo on Thursday.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Most high school football players will begin making their choices of college official on Wednesday, the first day of a signing period.

• San Francisco now is 5-1 in Super Bowl games while the Baltimore Ravens won for the second time in the Big One.

• Sports Illustrated was correct in picking the Ravens to win while Reck and seven of eight USA Today pickers were wrong in going with the 49ers.

• One of the key stats in the game was Frisco going 2 for 9 on third-down conversions.

• Columbus North was 12th in the USA Today prep girls cage poll last week and Bedford North Lawrence received votes. LaPorte LaLumiere was No. 7 in the boys poll.

• USA Today recently named its 30th-anniversary all-USA prep football team. Jeff George of Warren Central and Rod Woodson of Fort Wayne Snider were the Indiana players on the list.

• Parade Magazine announced its prep football All-America team. Jaylon Smith of Fort Wayne Luers was named at linebacker.

• Ashley Judd may not be making any more trips to Victory Lane at the Indianapolis 500. She and three-time race winner Dario Franchitti have announced their separation after 11 years of marriage.

• Terre Haute golfers, friends and family paid their respects last week to Jack Myers, who played a lot of rounds and followed others around when he wasn’t playing or when his round was complete in the city, senior city and other tournaments.

We’ll miss him this summer.

• Georgia tailback Ken Malcome says he is transferring to Southern Illinois.

• Former Miami of Florida baseball coach Ron Fraser died recently. He won 1,271 games and two NCAA championships at Miami and coached the U.S. team in the 1992 Olympics.

• J.D. Spangler was ill last month and Joey O’Rourke did a good job of doing several games in the Little Illini Conference tournament. He was assisted by Derek Eitel on some of them.

• Former Northview standout Austin Akers had 12 points, five assists and two steals in Eastern Illinois’ recent 78-72 victory over Southeast Missouri.
