RAMBLIN' RECK: North hopes to storm the Castle in regionals

TERRE HAUTE — Last week was a busy week for Tribune-Star staffers and most other sports staffs in the state, with all of them covering at least one high school boys basketball sectional tournament.

Four teams claiming spots in regional tournaments this week are Terre Haute North, Sullivan, Rockville and Eastern Greene.

One newspaper had Terre Haute South playing in the 4A regional, but it will be the 18-7 Patriots against 21-2 Castle while 22-2 Bloomington South takes on 16-7 New Albany. That is a tough regional.

Sullivan will put its 20-4 record on the line against 17-6 Corydon at Washington, while 20-4 Washington faces 19-6 Evansville Bosse in the other first-round game.

In 2A action at Southridge (Huntingburg), 22-2 Eastern Greene faces 11-11 Clarksville or 22-2 Brownstown Central — the Eastern (Pekin) title game was played Monday — and 23-0 Forest Park plays 18-5 Covenant Christian.

In the Class A regional at Frankfort, 19-6 Rockville meets 10-11 Southern Wells and 17-6 Blue River takes on 18-5 Lafayette Central Cathollic.

Good luck to the Rox, Patriots, Thunderbirds and Arrows.

I did okay on my sectional picks, going 7-3.

I was off on Eminence over White River Valley at WRV, Hamilton Southeastern over Carmel at Noblesville and Evansville Bosse over Princeton at Princeton.

Two of the regional coaches will have some extra work in preparation for the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Series.

Jeff Moore of Sullivan will be an assistant under Mike Hacket of Munster for senior boys. Andy Igel of Eastern will be an assistant under Mark Johnson of South Bend Riley for junior boys.

Several papers also were busy doing preview stories and covering games in the girls state finals last week including Andy Amey from our staff, who did stories on Turkey Run’s bid for a title that was ended with its loss to Vincennes Rivet, which went from Class A runner-up to champ.

Three parochial schools took titles to continue a trend that began with class basketball, particularly in girls sports.

Jeffersonville was the only public school to win, easily defeating Penn 43-29. Chad Gilbert, who began his college basketball career at Indiana State, is the coach at Jeff.

And so it went in high school sports last week.

• Payton to St. Mary — South Vermilllion senior Amanda Payton has signed to play college soccer at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

She lettered four years in high school, anchoring the team in goal, and earned Western Indiana Conference honors twice in addition to being team MVP once and serving as captain her senior season.

“Amanda will have a worthy challenge to step into a goalkeeper role with us but I believe she has what it takes,” said Mike Aycock, coach at SMWC.

Payton also won the prestigious Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship at the school.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — ISU grad Todd Coleman sends word on his son, 6-foot-2 junior Connor Coleman, who plays for Waverly-Shell Rock in Iowa. His team advanced to the 3A state finals with a 24-0 record.

Another Iowa player is Connor Schabel, son of ISU alum David Schabel, who plays for Ankeny.

• ISU grads did well in the recent USA Indoor Track Championships. Erica Moore was second in the 800 with a 2:02.92 time and Kylie Hutson fifth in the pole vault, going 14-feet-7 1/4.

• Red Grange of Illinois has been named the No. 1 Icon in the Big Ten in a special series done by The Big Ten Network.

As a junior against Michigan, he returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and had three other scores of 67, 56 and 49 yards — all in the first quarter — as the Illini won 39-14.

Rounding out the top five, in order, were Magic Johnson, Jesse Owens, Archie Griffin and Tom Harmon.

Rick Mount of Purdue was ninth and Isiah Thomas of Indiana No. 10.

• Jon Diebler of Ohio State is the all-time leader in the Big Ten in 3-point goals with 355 and counting.

He added seven to the total on Sunday against Wisconsin when OSU missed one trey and then hit 14 in a row.

• Jordan Hulls has hit 41 free throws in a row for IU, breaking the old mark of 38 set by Pat Graham in the 1990-91 season.
