RAMBLIN' RECK: Hey, Pittsburgh still has a chance at mid-season

TERRE HAUTE — The Fourth of July is history, and the all-star baseball game is coming up next week. In other words, major-league baseball is at the midseason mark.

Checking the standings, you find some of the usual teams in first place in their divisions or close to it. They include the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh is not in first place, but my Buccos are in a spot where they have not been at this stage of the season in recent years. They are in third place in the NL Central standings behind St. Louis and Milwaukee.

The Pirates were 44-41 after beating Houston on Monday.

We’re not celebrating yet, but we’re glad to see the Bucs winning and, just maybe, ending their 18-year string of losing seasons. Just maybe, we note. It would be nice.

Beat ’em Bucs, beat ’em.



Tom-Cattin’ It -- Shelby Stewart will attend Vincennes University and play golf for the Trailblazers. He played in the No. 2 slot for the Terre Haute South team that finished ninth in the state.

• Rea Park pro Dave Kennedy observed his 41st birthday on the Fourth of July.

• Billy Shepherd has been named boys basketball coach at Marion High School. He was interim coach at Muncie Central in the 2003-04 season, guiding the Bearcats to a 20-4 record and sectional championship.

Former Marion player James Blackmon had been hired earlier but decided to stay at Fort Wayne Luers.

Matt Seifers, an assistant at Bloomington South, is the new boys basketball coach at Mitchell. Bloomington South coach J. R. Holmes once coached the Bluejackets.

Former Butler and Iowa basketball coach Todd Lickliter has joined the Miami of Ohio staff as an assistant.

• Carmel teams won six state championships this year in IHSAA action. That is a record for one school in one season.

• News about a new event on the Brickyard 400 schedule is coming up this week. The NASCAR race will be run July 31 at Indianapolis.

• Bob Boxell, longtime sports information director at the University of Evansville, is resigning to begin a new career in financial advisement. He was one of the best in the business.

• The University of New Orleans will drop down to Division II for men’s basketball. Ron Greene was a former coach at the school.

• Bobby Capobianco, who had played basketball at Indiana, will transfer to Valparaiso acccording to published reports.

• The sixth annual Mayberry Classic is Saturday at Clay City with a 5K run and one-mile fun run and walk. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m.

• Pat Cannon sends information about recent Bloomington South graduate Gabe Hull, who won the discus and was third in the shot put in the IHSAA boys track meet. The 6-foot-8 athlete also won the discus last year and plans to attend the University of Iowa.

He is the son of former Terre Haute resident Christine Kunkler Hull, the wife of Tom Hull, and the grandson of Dr. Arnold Kunkler, a general surgeon formerly of Terre Haute who now resides in Indianapolis.
