RAMBLIN’ RECK: Major League baseball’s final playoff spots will soon be settled

TERRE HAUTE — The final regular games will be played this week in major league baseball with postseason slots still be filled.

Everything is pretty well set in the National League with Cincinnati clinching homefield advantage and Atlanta and St. Louis all but set as the two wild-card teams.

Detroit now is the most certain thing in the American League, holding a three-game lead over Chicago in the AL Central at the start of play Monday.

Texas still was in first in the AL West but Oakland was gaining on the Rangers and the teams close the season with a series in Oakland. And the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles were still battling it out in the Al East.

New York closes the season against Boston and Baltimore winds up against Tampa Bay.

At one time, my Pittsburgh Pirates were looking good — they were 16 games over .500 in August — but the Bucs did another dive in the past month or so and will have a 20th straight losing season.

They’re still my team but it would be nice if they won again.

At least they will finish fourth in the NL Central while Houston has lost 100 games and Chicago was at 99 going into the final series after beating Arizona on Sunday.

• Leaders in state — Players from the area were among the state leaders in Indiana high school football going into last week’s games.

Austin Karazsia of Linton was sixth in passing, completing 110 of 151 passes for 1,514 yards. Payne Fortner of Sullivan should be in the top 10 after his game last week.

Chase VanSchoyck of North Central ranked seventh in rushing with 109 carries for 1,005 yards. He definitely will move up this week after toppling the old state rushing mark last week.

Grant Stamm of Linton was eighth in receiving with 33 catches for 618 yards.

Dante Rehmel of North Central was ninth in solo tackles with 56 and tied for fifth in tackles for losses with 14.

Carmel moved into the top 25 in the USA Today prep football poll last week at No. 22 and could move up more following its 10-7 overtime victory over Warren Central last week.

Ben Davis also received votes in the poll.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — North Central won another SWIAC championship in boys tennis and has not lost a match since joining the league in 2010.

North Central’s choir will perform at the Indiana Pacers’ game with Washington on Nov. 21.

• Evansville and Southern Indiana will meet in a men’s basketball exhibition on Oct. 27.

Evansville Harrison junior Ernie Duncan had committed to Evansville in January but he says he has reopened recruiting.

Newest additions to the USI roster are 6-foot-6 Orlando Rutledge, who played for Lakeland College in Illinois, and 6-9 Keith DeWitt, who has been at Southern Mississippi and Chipola Junior College.

Rice standout Arsaian Kazemi has enrolled at Oregon. He averaged 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds last season.

• Jessie Miller, Zach Hyde and Jacob Little each scored twice in Northview’s 54-6 homecoming football victory over South Vermillion. Miller rushed for 156 yards.

St. Joseph-Ogden was one of the unbeaten teams in Illinois after nipping St. Thomas More 27-20. SJO played Marshall to start the season.

• ESPNU will televise the opening Indiana University basketball practice Oct. 12. Fans can watch the team at Hoosier Hysteria on Oct. 20.

• The Brickyard 400 is scheduled for July 28 at Indianapolis and the July 25-28 weekend again will include a Nationwide Series race and Grand-Am racing.

• Mike Trout of Los Angeles is the first major league rookie to have 30 home runs and 40 stolen bases. Only two players in the big leagues ever had 30 homers and 50 stolen bases — Eric Davis and Barry Bonds — and Trout got his 48th on Sunday.

Teenager Dylan Bundy, 19, has joined the Baltimore staff for bullpen work.
