TERRE HAUTE —
September is a busy month for golfers in the area and this week may be the busiest.
The week began with the conclusion of the Spaghetti Open, played for more than 40 years at Matthews Park in Clinton.
Bob Kyle has been a contender lots of times and has finished second. He won the event for the first time.
Rich Schelsky, a former winner, took second for the second year in a row.
Both of the players will be in Show-Me’s Terre Haute City Tournament that begins Saturday. The field will play two rounds at Rea Park and two at Hulman Links with the action winding up a week from Sunday.
Hopefully, rain will hold off for all four days. Last year, the action was cut to 63 holes due to heavy, continuous rain the last day.
Schelsky won for the first time.
High school girls golf teams will wind up the regular season and compete in sectionals. Most teams in the area will be in the Northview Sectional set for Saturday at Forest Park in Brazil, but some teams will be in new sectionals following a realignment by the IHSAA.
Some of the changes made sense. Others did not.
Terre Haute North and South and the host Knights will vie for top honors in the Northview Sectional with three teams advancing to a rugged Roncalli Regional at Smock Golf Course.
South played its final nine-hole match on Monday and North has Senior Night action slated this evening at Hulman Links. West Vigo will play its final match on Thursday at Rea Park.
• Top feat — Terre Haute South grad Tad Meyer recently took part in the Leadville 100, a trail race in Colorado.
The race began in Leadville, with elevation of 10,120 feet above sea level, and continued on a course with the elevation going to more than 12,600 feet.
Brother Chris was the pacer for Tad the final 50 miles of the action, which he completed in just over 28 hours to finish 200th. The winner’s time was 16 hours plus.
That finish may not sound great until you know that only 395 entrants of the 795 who began finished the 100-mile trek.
It wears me out just thinking about.
• Great guy — Condolences to the family of Dave Sabaini, who died last week at the age of 58.
He had been on the staff at Indian State University since 1983 and was director of student media at the time of his death.
He was active in youth sports and served as a sports official for many years.
We got to know him when he was the partner of the late Bob Forbes on radio broadcasts of ISU basketball and football.
Dave will be missed by many.
• Tom-Cattin’ It— Indiana University will play Indiana Wesleyan in an exhibition men’s basketball game on Nov. 1 and will open the season Nov. 9 against Bryant.
• Former Ben Davis cager Trevor Thompson says he will sign with Virginia Tech. He now is enrolled in an academy in Wisconsin.
The 6-foot-10 player averaged 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks his senior season.
• Tony Schumacher won his ninth class Top Fuel title in the rain-delayed NHRA Nationals at Clermont. Terre Haute’s Bob Glidden is the only other driver to win as many titles, doing it in Pro Stock.
• Steve Van Buren, Hall of Fame halfback for the Philadelphia Eagles, has died at 91.
• It was good to see Jeff Gordon make the chase again in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing. He had two great runs in the last two races.
