TERRE HAUTE —
The prelims are over for Big Ten football teams. Ten of the 11 teams open conference play Saturday, with Purdue enjoying a break in the schedule.
Going into the first week of league play, six teams have yet to lose but two of them will have one defeat after Saturday since Wisconsin is playing Michigan State and Michigan is playing at Indiana.
Ohio State and Northwestern are the other unbeatens and both could still be perfect after Saturday with the Buckeyes playing at Illinois and Northwestern going to winless Minnesota.
OSU has won or shared five straight Big Ten championships and was one of three league teams to score 60 or more points last week as the Buckeyes bested Eastern Michigan 73-20.
Wisconsin battered Austin Peay 70-3 and Michigan handled Bowling Green 65-21.
IU improved to 3-0 with its 35-20 victory over Akron.
Two of the league leaders will meet in the Hoosiers’ game with Michigan that will start at 3:30 p.m. and be carried by ESPNU.
Denard Robinson of Michigan is the leader in rushing with 688 yards and is first in total offense, combining the rush total with 731 yards passing. He was injured in last week’s game but figures to play at IU.
Ben Chappell of IU is the leader in passing offense, averaging 296.7 yards per game. He’s thrown for nine touchdowns.
It’s probably good that Purdue has the week off after losing to Toledo. Quarterback Robert Marve injured his left knee and was slated to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Franklin will meet IU in a Nov. 3 exhibition.
Notre Dame will play Kentucky in the Big East-SEC Challenge at Louisville.
Purdue has sold more than 14,000 season tickets for the season.
Southern Indiana has added a player to its roster with 6-foot-4 guard Eduardo Gallina of Brazil in school. He played on two Brazilian championship teams and played on two state prep championship teams in Louisiana.
Buddy Graham was honored with the Faculty Citation Award at Vincennes University, where he played after scoring 1,383 points and snaring 929 rebounds at Odon High School. He finished his college career at Texas Wesleyan.
He won 806 games in Illinois and guided Madison High School to state championships.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — Terre Haute North got a nice victory in freshman football last week with the Patriots beating Warren Central.
Payne Fortner started at quarterback for Sullivan against Owen Valley and had two touchdown passes.
North Knox is 6-0 after defeating Union 38-14 in the Bulldogs’ homecoming game. North Knox is 4-0 in the Southwest Seven Conference and is at Linton on Friday.
In last week’s USA Today prep poll, Warren Central was 23rd in the country and No. 2 in the Midwest. Carmel was eighth in the regional list.
• Chad Collins will return to the PGA Tour next week and will play in two of the events in the Fall Series.
Rachel Welker of Terre Haute North is qualified for the girls state finals in golf and will tee off at 8:57 a.m. Friday. Zionsville has qualified as a team and senior Ellen Hosking, who has Terre Haute relatives, will tee off at 8:39 a.m.
• Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker won his 1,400th game last week and evened his record with Reds at 238-238.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has lost 100 games again but has been winning a new games lately and could have clinched the NL Central for the Reds by beating St. Louis on Monday.
• As reported earlier, A.J. Graves will coach the White River Valley girls basketball team. He also is coaching the WRV cross country runners at the school while working at Crane.
WRV and other teams will compete in the SWIAC meet this week.
In volleyball, Edgewood and Sullivan will vie for the Western Indiana Conference crown next week.
• Rock N Roll Heaven won the $604,100 Little Brown Jug for pacers last week in Ohio, matching the world record of 1 minute, 49 2/5 seconds for 3-year-old pacers on a half-mile track.
