TERRE HAUTE —
The high school sports schedules are busy again this week, with local boys golf teams playing two matches at Rea Park.
Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and West Vigo will vie for county honors today in a nine-hole match with the Patriots being the favorites.
Those teams and others from the area will return to the course on Saturday for the South Braves Invitational. North, Greencastle and Linton could be top finishers in the 12-team event.
North has not been in a complete match since finishing third in the Northview Invitational. The Patriots got in several holes last Saturday before rain wiped out the Danville Invitational.
Older golfers — men and women — have the chance to play in a Par-3 Shootout on Saturday at Hulman Links. Two-man tournaments are slated for April 28-29 at Forest Park and May 5-6 at Geneva Hills.
Juniors may take part in a free clinic April 28 at Rea Park. Indiana State coach Greg Towne and ISU players will provide instruction from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and lunch will be provided.
In other golf news:
• Chris Cassell is the coach of the South boys golf team and shot a scintillating 62 at Forest Park before the Northview Invitational.
• Two former teammates at South Vermillion did well in the Rose-Hulman Invitational played Sunday at Hulman Links.
Brandon Bekkering, playing for DePauw, and Logan Burdick, who is at Wabash, tied for fourth in the big field, both shooting 152. Bekkering went 71-81 and Burdick was 74-78.
Centre took team honors. DePauw was third while Wabash tied for fourth.
• Terre Haute South grad Thomas Goss is sidelined with a shoulder injury at the University of Dayton.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — Jay Spoonhour, son of the late Charlie Spoonhour, is the new men’s basketball coach at Eastern Illinois.
He has been the coach at Moberly (Mo.) Area Community College the past three years, compiling a 64-27 record, and has been assistant at three NCAA Division I schools including UNLV under his dad, who had lots of success at Missouri State and was on the Missouri Valley Conference television crew after getting out of coaching.
• Will Power is off to a great start in IZOD IndyCar Series action, winning his second race Sunday at Long Beach in spite of starting 12th.
• Indianapolis North Central runner Futsum Zeinasellassie recently ran a 3,200-meter race in 8:47.75 in California. Rudy Chapa of Hammond established the official state-record time of 8:51 for the two-mile run in 1975.

• Alex Rodriguez hit his 630th homer last week for New York, tying him with former teammate Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth on the homer list.
• John Hart has resigned as football coach at Warren Central, citing difference with the prinicipal. He had a 41-9 record in four years and won a state championship. Jason Thompson is the new football coach at Cascade and will continue to coach the baseball team. He had been on the football staff at Pike the past four seasons.
• Austin Callahan of Hutsonville-Palestine has signed to play basketball at Lincoln Trail College.
• Former Terre Haute North tennis player Andy Hopkins is serving as interim coach of the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Indiana Tech. He was a graduate assistant last year.
Hopkins graduated from Ohio Northern with a degree in psychology and was on the Dean’s List at the school.
