TERRE HAUTE —
The finals have just ended in the National Basketball Association and fans cheered the Los Angeles Lakers in a championship parade on Monday.
Television ratings were up for the Lakers’ showdown with Boston, with three of the games being the top three programs on network television last week. It’s likely the final two games also were at or near the top.
Next comes the draft. Teams will make their picks Thursday night and web sites and publications have come up with mock drafts.
It’s a given that Washington will go with John Wall of Kentucky as the top pick. After that, it’s not as certain.
Indiana has the 10th pick unless the Pacers make a deal and move up in the picking order.
If they don’t, ESPN The Magazine and The Sporting News both have Indiana taking 6-foot-10 power forward Ed Davis of North Carolina.
Some Indiana fans would like the team to choose Gordon Hayward of Butler, but that’s not likely.
TSN has the Bulldog going to Houston with the 14th pick. The pro players who make up the ESPN panel have him taken by San Antonio with the 20th choice.
Both publications have Jordan Crawford, ex-IU player who went to Xavier, taken in the first round. ESPN says he will go to Minnesota and TSN says he will be taken by Atlanta.
We’ll know Thursday night, with ESPN carrying the action.
• Coaches named — More coaches have been hired by high schools in the state and one veteran mentor has retired.
Basil Mawbey says he will retire after 39 seasons of coaching basketball, last year at Indianapolis Broad Ripple.
He won state championships at Connersville and Lewis Cass.
Scott McClelland is the new boys basketball coach at Brebeuf. He had been at Morristown for seven years and before that was an assistant at Indianapolis Scecina.
Evansville Central has hired Scott Hudson. He has been coaching 16 years and spent the last eight at Eastside.
In prep baseball, private schools claimed three of the four state championships last week.
Lafayette Central Catholic bested Tecumseh 4-2 in Class A while Heritage Christian defeated Delphi 5-1 in 2A and Andrean stopped Jasper 6-1 for the 3A crown.
Carroll (Allen) nipped Indianapolis Cathedral 1-0 in nine innings for the 4A title.,
• Tom-Cattin’ It — The Indiana Pacers have a new assistant coach.
Walter McCarty was named last week. The native of Evansville played college ball at Kentucky and 10 years in the pros with four teams, one of them being Boston. He was an assistant at Louisville last season under Rick Pitino.
• One college baseball coach has taken a new job while another got the ax.
Ohio State has named Greg Beals as its new coach. He had been at Ball State the past eight seasons.
Dave Schrage was canned at Notre Dame after the Irish suffered their first losing season since 1987, going 22-32.
He was 119-104-1 in four years at the school.
• Bawa Muniru, a 6-11 sophomore at Indiana, says he will transfer and that will open up a scholarship for the Hoosiers.
Point guard DeAndre McCamey, brother of Illinois player Demetri McCamey, will attend Vincennes University.
Jeff Watkinson, the basketball strength coach at IU, has resigned to be personal trainer for former Hoosier Eric Gordon.
