RAMBLIN’ RECK: Successful girls hoops season ends for Valley

TERRE HAUTE — The season has ended for girls high school basketball teams in the area and is winding down for the boys teams.

Marshall’s 25-2 season — tying the 2011-2012 Lions for best record in school history — ended with a hard-fought defeat against Teutopolis in the Class 2A Newton Sectional. The Wooden Shoes went on to win the sectional with a 56-34 victory over top-ranked Mt. Carmel. Danielle Repking had 22 points for the winners, while Tyra Buss ended her record-breaking junior year with 20 points for the Aces.

Shakamak, North Vermillion and Sullivan all won their morning games in Indiana regionals but lost in title tilts.

One of the top games in the state was played in the Class 4A Bedford North Lawrence Regional matching No. 1 Columbus North against No. 2 BNL. BNL won 71-45 and defeated Franklin Central 58-51 for the title.

The Stars will face Roncalli in the southern semistate. Roncalli was a 42-32 winner over Mooresville for a regional title.

• Format changed — Boys high school golf teams in this area won’t have far to travel for the first two rounds of the postseason in the proposed tournament schedule released by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Most teams in this area will be in sectional play at Phil Harris Course at Linton or Crawfordsville Municipal.

Qualifiers from those two sectionals, along with those played at Indianapolis, Evansville, Martinsville and Vincennes, will vie for Terre Haute South Regional honors at Hulman Links, one of five regional sites in the state. Others will be hosted by Clarksville Providence, Lafayette Jeff, Warsaw and Muncie Central.

All 15 teams and individual qualifiers will play 36 holes at the state finals with no first-day cut.

• Good man — Funeral services were conducted for Ernie Woods last week.

Ernie was a standout player in baseball and played a good game of golf. He played in the old Three-I League and won a batting championship.

We got to know him at the Tribune-Star where he worked for more than 40 years in the mail room. Good man.

Tom-Cattin’ It:

• Action regarding football coaches has taken place in the past couple weeks.

Evansville North has named Bret Szabo as its new coach. He has been at Bedford North Lawrence and previously was an assistant at Evansville Harrison.

Joe Gengelbach says he is retiring after 42 years at North Posey. He had a 256-193-1 record.

John Butler’s contract as football coach at Cloverdale will not be renewed. He had a 4-18 record in two years.

• Evansville Harrison defeated Evansville Bosse 78-60 in a matchup of ranked teams. Bosse standout JaQuan Lyle did not play; he was under indefinite suspension.

• Vincennes University defeated Olney Central 77-74 in district men’s junior college basketball action and took a 23-1 record into a game with Lincoln Land.

• Management says The Oaks Tennis and Golf Club will be closed. It began as Oak Meadows Golf Club in 1972.

• Indiana State has signed standout distance runner Michael Passmore of Mooresville in track. Sycamore teams will go for indoor Missouri Valley Conference indoor track titles this weekend.

• President Obama played some golf last weekend in Florida. Tiger Woods was one of the players in his foursome.
