RAMBLIN’ RECK: Former TH South golfers are on national JUCO contender

Vincennes University’s men’s golf team will be in New York next week, competing in the junior college national championship action.

Two members of the team are from Terre Haute: South grad Shelby Stewart and North grad Walker Smith.

The Trailblazers earned the right to be in the nationals by winning the Region XII tournament played in Middletown, Ohio. They edged Cincinnati State for first place by one shot, 940-941.

Josh Bialecki of Cincinnati State was medalist with 224. Stewart and two other VU players tied for second, all with 234 scores.

Stewart shot 76 in the first round and was low for the team in the second round with 74. Smith had 252 for the three-day event.

The national action will be at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, N.. Y.



College-bound — Three seniors at Northview have confirmed where they will be going to college.

Zach Hull will attend Rose-Hulman and play baseball.

Kodie Girton is going to Indiana State and play baseball.

Chance Talbot will go to Urbana in Ohio and play football.

Northview’s baseball team, of course, will compete in the Class 4A regional at Avon.

Shakamak’s baseball team will be in the Class A regional at Morristown and Turkey Run will be in the Class A regional at Lafayette Central Catholic.

The Shakamak softball team will continue play in the Class A semistate at North Daviess.

Shakamak is one of the few teams in the state to have two teams still alive in the postseason.



Tom-Cattin’ It — Some former Terre Haute residents and two of the greats from the city got together at an Indiana Pacer game last week.

Terry Dischinger attended the Indianapolis 500 and Charlie Williams writes that Jim and Bill Bindley had him as their guest at the game.

At halftime, they got together with "Slick" Leonard who still is on the radio team for the Pacers.

• Indiana finally will play Nebraska in Big Ten football in 2015 and 2016 according to schedules released by the Hoosiers.

• Indiana State will play at IU this year, in 2013 and in 2014 while the Sycamores will be at Purdue in 2013 and 2015.

• Officials in the NBA playoff game between Miami and Boston on Monday got a little crazy, whistling five technicals.

• Doug O’Neill, trainer for Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another, recently was suspended for 45 days for improper use of carbon dioxide in one of his horses.

• Bob Boozer has died at the age of 75. He played for the U.S. in the Olympics and retired after 11 years in the NBA after helping Milwaukee win a championship in 1971.

• Brian Shaw, associate head coach for the Pacers, has been mentioned in connection with some of the jobs open in the league.

• Purdue will be without second baseman Eric Charles for its first game in the NCAA baseball tournament as a result of being involved in some non-game action in the Big Ten championship game with Indiana.

• Casey Smith of IU will miss the first game of the 2013 season for his involvement.
