RAMBLIN' RECK: Retiring Casey football coaches Sinclair, Vidoni will be missed

TERRE HAUTE — An era ended in Casey last week when Keith Sinclair and Gene Vidoni announced they are retiring as football coaches at Casey-Westfield High School.

Their achievements were well-documented in a story by David Hughes when they announced their retirements last week. They're pretty remarkable.

In Sinclair's 23 years as coach with Vidoni serving on his staff most of the time, the Warriors played in four state championship games and brought home a championship in 1985.

Nine of his teams were undefeated in the regular season and a record 46-game winning streak was ended last season.

Hundreds of his players have gone on to play college football, several of them going to Rose-Hulman.

We covered the Warriors’ postseason competition in recent years.

Coach Sinclair always had information about his team and the upcoming opponent available and took time to discuss the games before practice.

Everything he did, including postgame comments even in defeat, was done with class.

God speed in your retirement, coach. You will be missed.

John Grimes also has announced his retirement as men’s basketball coach at Marian University.

Grimes was a three-sport athlete at Gerstmeyer High School and played football at Indiana State.

He’s been coaching since his graduation from college and his teams at Marian won 566 games in 36 seasons. He also served as athletic director.

Great job, John.

• Totals down – Attendance was down for Indiana high school basketball state finals.

Boys totals were the lowest since class basketball started in spite of the fact that four of the eight teams were from the Indy area.

Girls totals also were down but all of the teams were more than 60 miles away from Terre Haute, most of them considerably further.

In both cases, some of the best followings came for the A teams, particularly Rockville, Loogootee and Northeast Dubois.

Boys

A-2A attendance – 10,704

3A-4A attendance – 12,116

Total – 22,820

Girls

A-2A attendance – 3,838

3A-4A attendance – 4,709

Total – 8,547

• Tom-Cattin' It -- Simeon junior Jabari Parker has been named Illinois Mr. Basketball, receiving 74 of 93 first-place votes.

Two other members of The Chicago Tribune all-state first team will go to Missouri Valley schools: Aaron Simpson of North Chicago to Illinois State and Fred VanVleet of Rockford Auburn to Wichita State.

• Robert Boltinghouse is the new athletic director and assistant principal at Clay City High School. He is an ISU grad and has been teaching and coaching at Edgewood.

• Emily Bishop of Marshall, Ill., will play softball at Lake Land College.

• Interviews continue for the Eastern Illinois men's basketball coaching postitions.

Former ISU aide Doug Novsek will have his interview on Wednesday. Former ISU aide Kareem Richardson was on campus last week.

• Reports persist that Butler, VCU, Creighton and George Mason are schools that could replace Temple in the Atlantic-10 Conference.

• Ther NFL has adopted the same overtime rule for the regular season that applies in the postseason, meaning each team will have an offensive possession.

• Teams have been chosen for the Hall of Fame Classic games next season.

In the boys action, Indianapolis Cathedral will play Jay County and Fort Wayne Northrop faces Indianapolis Tech. Brenton Scott plays for Northrop and says he will play for ISU.

• The Sullivan third-grade boys won the Indiana Basketball Association state championship.

• Jamie Moyer has made the Colorado rotation at the age of 49.
