RAMBLIN' RECK: Unbeaten football seasons on line for Linton, North Central

TERRE HAUTE — We’re down to the final week of the high school football season for teams in Indiana and some really big games mark the schedule in the area.

Linton and North Central both are undefeated and meet at North Central for Southwest Seven Conference honors.

Both teams have racked up big scores all season and both teams have players ranked in the Top 10 in the state.

Austin Karazsia, Linton’s quarterback, was first going into last week’s games with 269.57 average yardage per game and 25 touchdown passes.

North Central’s Dante Rehmel was near the top in defense with 91 solo tackles, 49 assists, 14 sacks and 17 tackles for losses in eight games.

Fountain Central is undefeated and meets 7-1 Rockville in the season finale for Wabash River Conference honors.

In other games, Castle goes for a 9-0 mark against Evansville Memorial, and North Putnam shoots for the same mark under new coach Brian Crabtree against Cloverdale. Castle survived a two-overtime 51-48 victory over Evansville Mater Dei to remain unbeaten.

Warren Central also will be out to close out an undefeated season. Last week, in the USA Today prep football poll, the Warriors were 13th and second in the Midwest Regional. Carmel was eighth in the Midwest.

• Honor for Myers — A new memorial marker has been placed at Fairbanks Park denoting the softball facility as Wayne L. Myers Memorial Park.

That’s a nice tribute to the man who did so much for softball not only locally but in the state and nation.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Players from the area ranked in the top 10 in soccer prior to sectional play last week.

In boys totals, Sonney Basham  of Greencastle was second in goals with 43 while Tucker Smith of Sullivan was fourth with 32, Jacob Parham of Terre Haute North seventh with 28 and Nic Henderson of Terre Haute South in a tie for ninth with 25.

In assists, Evan Smith of Greencastle was second with 28 with teammates Brandon Query and Daniel Fayette tied for fourth, both with 17.

In the girls totals, Christina Haag of Sullivan was tied for second in goals with 32 and teammate Caryssa West was a leader in assists with 19.

• Kelsi Byrd of North Montgomery says she will play college basketball at IUPUI and Lawrence North senior Eron Harris plans to go to West Virginia.

• Hoosier native Del Harris, who has been involved in the NBA for years including coaching stints at Los Angeles and Milwaukee, will coach the Texas Legends, the Dallas team in the NBA Developmental League. He has been general manager of the team.

Don’t know how the labor talks will affect the D League but its season probably could be in jeopardy too if no progress is made in the talks.

Congratulations to former Indiana State coach Cheryl Reeve for guiding Minnesota to the championship of the WNBA. Her team also had the best regular-season mark of 27-7.

Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever was Most Valuable Player and the top vote-getter for the All-WNBA team.

• Tiger Woods looked better in PGA play last week after a bad start. Meanwhile, he dropped out of the Top 50 in the rankings for the first time in nearly 15 years, a run of 778 consecutive weeks.

• Tony LaRussa, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, turned 67 last week. Wonder where he will be for his 68th birthday?

• Evansville has gotten another commitment in basketball from 6-foot-8, 215-pound David Howard of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn. He averaged 12 points per game as a junior.
