RAMBLIN' RECK: Two valley teams alive in high school FB playoffs

Casey-Westfield, No. Putnam trying to move ahead

TERRE HAUTE — Then there were two … two high school football teams in the greater Wabash Valley still alive in the postseason competition.

Casey-Westfield and North Putnam both are undefeated and both are seeking another victory in Class 2A action, the Warriors in Illinois and the Cougars in Indiana.

Casey is in the Elite Eight in Illinois for the eighth straight year, defeating Carmi-White County and Carlinville to earn the right to meet Staunton in the third round.

The 11-0 Warriors and 10-1 Bulldogs meet at Staunton on Saturday with kickoff at 1:30 p.m. CST.

Both teams have been big winners so far in the playoffs. Staunton defeated Red Bud in the first round 61-36 and bested Johnston City, a No. 1 seed, last week 42-7.

Casey stopped Carmi in the first round 36-16 and whipped Carlinville 44-8 last week.

The Cavaliers — a team that had not allowed a point since the eighth week of the season — did not score until the final minute.

Casey was without leading rusher Ajaye Meeks, but Taylor White, Austin Ragsdale and Heath Huisinga took up the slack and then some in assuming a 21-0 lead at halftime. Clinton Scott is one of the seniors on the team and was a force at defensive end in keeping the Cavs from going outside.

He also blocked a punt and ran a fake punt to get a key first down.

North Putnam takes a 12-0 mark into Friday’s regional game with 11-1 Speedway at North Putnam. These teams have met in the past in sectional and conference (West Central) games but the Sparkplugs no longer are in that league.

North Putnam defeated Speedway a year ago but Speedway won in the tournament, edging the Cougars 28-27 when North Putnam went for two and failed.

Greg Barrett is in his third year at North Putnam and has a 31-4 mark. His team outscored opponents 131-28 to win its sectional.

It would be nice to be able to write about the Warriors and Cougars for a couple more weeks.

• Titles decided — State championships were decided in Indiana volleyball action last week with two teams claiming their first titles in the sport.

Penn was a first-time winner in Class 4A, defeating Muncie Central 25-18, 30-28, 25-22.

Bellmont won its second state championship in Class 3A, defeating Brebeuf 25-23, 25-14, 27-25.

Muncie Burris won its 14th straight championship in Class 2A, besting Fairfield in the finals 25-12, 25-12, 25-11.

Lafayette Central Catholic — which eliminated Rockville 3-1 in the regional — was the other first-time winner and had a tough time with Indianapolis Lutheran, prevailing 25-9, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18.

And so it went in the finals at Muncie.

• Flanagan competes — The annual New York City Marathon was contested Sunday.

Former Olympic 10,000-meter bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan, 29, ran in her first marathon and finished second to Edna Kiplagat of Kenya.

Flanagan’s second-place finish was best for an American woman since 1990 and earned her $60,000 for being second and $40,000 for taking the U.S. championship. She’s the daughter of Indiana State University Hall of Famer Cheryl (Pedlow) Treworgy, who earned honors herself in the marathon.
