TERRE HAUTE —
As major league baseball teams have begun spring training and the first exhibition games have been played, three former Indiana State players are found on the 40-man rosters of the teams.
Two are pitchers and the third is a veteran infielder who is with a new team this season.
Those Sycamores in the big time are Joe Thatcher with San Diego, Mitch Stetter with Milwaukee and Clint Barmes, now with Houston after spending his early career with Colorado.
Good luck to all of them.
Ron Santo died since the end of last season, leaving a big void in the radio booth of the Chicago Cubs.
Keith Moreland, a former Cub like Santo, has been hired to join Pat Hughes on the network.
He was an outfielder for the team, retiring in 1989. He’s been doing radio work for University of Texas football and baseball.
• Pickin’ em — Indiana boys high school basketball teams begin tournament play tonight with sectional games slated all around the area and state.
Tradition calls for it to snow in the week. Right now, forecasts don’t show any in the area, but that can change.
My picks:
4A
Northview — This one is wide open. Terre Haute North and South should meet in the semis. We like the Patriots to win this one.
Noblesville — Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern should be the teams to beat. Carmel.
Indianapolis Broad Ripple — MIC rivals North Central and Lawrence North vie with a tough Indianapolis Cathedral team. North Central.
3A
Greencastle — Sullivan and Edgewood should meet in the semifinals. It ought to be a good, and the West Vigo Vikings would like to get the winner in the championship. Sullivan.
Southridge — Washington has the bye in this one as the Hatchets begin their bid for another state title. Hatchets.
Princeton — The host team and Boonvile both are tough. Princeton.
2A
Eastern Greene — The host team should prevail, but Bloomfield may challenge the Thunderbirds. And Linton is playing well.
A
North Vermillion — Rockville is coming off a great weekend and should continue to savor victory. Rox.
North Daviess — The Cougars will be tested by Loogootee and Barr-Reeve but should prevail. North Daviess.
White River Valley — The Wolverines have the best record and should win. WRV.
•n Tom-Cattin’ It — More high school seniors have chosen their colleges.
David Knight of Terre Haute North will go to Marian University to play football while Alicyn Woodward of West Vigo will play softball at Olney Central and Kayla Downing of Greencastle will play the same sport at Lincoln Trail.
• Doug Williams is the new football coach at Grambling.
• Our thoughts are with the family of former Indiana State basketball player Steve Hollenbeck. He died last week.
• Kurt Thomas has played his 1,000th game with the Chicago Bulls.
• In last week’s girls prep basketball poll, Ben Davis was 20th after losing and sixth in the regional poll. No other Indiana team was ranked.
• Matt Howard of Butler was named Academic All-American of the Year.
• Evansville closed out the season with a victory over Illinois State, winning the final game to be played in fabled Roberts Coliseum. The Aces meet Indiana State in the Valley Tourney this week.
• ESPN carried the Missouri State-Wichita State game last week as they battled for the MVC championship. The game was a classic and the atmosphere superb. The Valley looked great.
